I'm Not Your Toy Lyrics

Love, love is like a stubborn youth
That you'd rather just deny
I'm walking on a broken roof
While I'm looking at the sky.

It's all false love and affection,
You don't want me, you just like the attention
Yes, it's all false love and affection,
You don't like me, you just want the attention.

I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy
I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy.

Love, love hides in a smoky light,
I can never find the truth
Boy, your touches leave me mystified
I wish I could believe in you.

Yes it's all false love and affection,
You don't want me, you just like the attention
Yes, it's all false love and affection,
You don't like me, you just want the attention.

I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy
I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy.

To me, this song didn't strike me as a gay relationship, or a boyfriend-girlfriend thing, but the usual thing of being messed around. But maybe that's because it's similar to what I'm going through at the moment. That's what I love about La Roux, it's so easy to relate to everything she writes. So this is what I think:

Your love is like a stubborn youth That you'd rather just deny

The guy (we'll say it's a to make it easy, but obviously it could be a girl) will not ever say that he loves her or let himself love her. He probably doesn't want to love, likes to be free and single.

I'm walking on a broken roof But I'm looking at the sky.

She's going through a lot of crap and confusion (the broken roof), which he's putting her through, and she knows it. Yet somehow, she still tries to fool herself that everything's great and will turn out alright (looking at the sky).

It's all false love and affection, You don't want me, you just like the attention Yes, it's all false love and affection, You don't like me, you just want the attention.

All the love and affection that he shows her isn't really true, he probably does like her a bit, but not enough. All the love and affection he shows her isn't because he loves her or wants to be with her - just because she's another girl he fancies a bit and he likes the attention she gives him.

I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy.

He's messing her around, and she thinks to herself 'i'm not your toy' because that's the way he treats her - she doesn't want to be just his toy to play around with when + how he feels like it. And although she might want it to be, she knows their situation isn't a true girl-meets-boy story, because to him she doesn't really mean anything. She's angry and upset about it and is indignant that she won't be his toy anymore, even though she knows she probably will.

Your love hides in a smoky night, I can never find the truth

He keeps everything mysterious and plays her hot and cold, so she never really knows the truth to how he feels about her.

Boy, your touches leave me mystified I wish I could believe in you.

She loves his touches but they also leave her with mixed feelings - she doesn't know what he means by them, and she wants so much to believe in him, to believe that she's important to him and his feelings for her are deep, but she knows she can't.

It's all false love and affection, You don't want me, you just like the attention Yes, it's all false love and affection, You don't like me, you just want the attention.

I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy.

I love your interpretation of the song. I agree! I love this song so much.

@wastedbritishyouth Going through this right now... it's done. I'm through with this guy! Your interpretation was spot on.

You don't want me, you just like the attention You don't like me, you just want the attention

This is exactly what I've realized a few times: I've had feelings for a guy and haven't hidden them, and the guy has been returning every glance etc. and basically making me think that he feels the same way about me. But then it turns out that he's not actually interested, he was just enjoying and encouraging the adorement he was getting. "All false love and affection."

Memory

agree with you.

like boy just likes the idea of love you are giving to him. he feels good and probably stays in that situation as long as his satisfied. he's basically selfish. and of course it could be other way around.

i find myself in same situation. FALSE LOVE AND AFFECTION - true!

Same thing kinda happening with me. ITs not love. Like I like the boy and I flirt with him every chance I get, and I try to show him that I like him. and one day i hugged him as a dare, and I asked him did he like the dare and did he think it was weird , he said "Yea, But I like the attention" Fits the lyrics. "You dont want me, you just like the attention." And I'm not trying to gay bash here, but this song is clearly not about a gay relationship. Like seriously. She...

Your love hides in a smoky night, I can never find the truth

Really wasn't sure about these lines, just had an educated guess. Heart this song much!

I think it is about how a girl feels that the love she is receiving is not true, that is acting by a boyfriend who needs to love, to give hugs, just to feel better, not because he loves her. So that kind of love is not real, she feels that all the affection hides something, that it is not because of her:

Your love hides in a smoky night, I can never find the truth Boy, your touches leave me mystified I wish I could believe in you.

She is in love, mystified, but she doesn't think the boy really loves her.

The first time I heard this I assumed she was in a gay relationship. Basically how the girl she likes is using her for attention and treating her like a toy.

crazy shit.

I love the 'broken roof' part, such a great metaphor for that feeling of limbo.... Halfway between the gutter and the stars...

And also the 'stubborn youth' metaphor. Love is like that - insistent and pushy and likely to throw a tantrum when denied - no matter how damaging to your heart that may be.

This has the same meanings as bulletproof according to Elly. It's basically fighting back against being messed around.

Same thing 'Bulletproof' is about...being used.
