The Sweetest Thing Lyrics
I'm going on a date tonight
To try to fall out of love with you
I know, I know this is a crime
But I don't know what else to do
My love, you're in a magazine
My love, you're doing fine, you're on TV
You pull my heart out and then you run away
From Chicago to Cleveland you leave me pain
You leave me pain
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother to hear you sing
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother
On the bus radio, "Fifty ways to leave your lover alone"
I laughed at the irony
But life is stupid, the irony all lost on me
It got lost on me
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother to hear you sing
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother
You challenged me to write a love song
Here it is, I think I got it wrong
I focused on the negative
The pain was too much to write and sing
Oh, it was not a nice incentive
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my other to hear you sing
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my other to hear you sing
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother to hear you sing
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother
But she don't know just how far I'd go
Would I walk for a hundred miles for a glimpse of your northern smile?
To try to fall out of love with you
I know, I know this is a crime
But I don't know what else to do
My love, you're doing fine, you're on TV
You pull my heart out and then you run away
From Chicago to Cleveland you leave me pain
You leave me pain
I would trade my mother to hear you sing
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother
I laughed at the irony
But life is stupid, the irony all lost on me
It got lost on me
I would trade my mother to hear you sing
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother
Here it is, I think I got it wrong

When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing

Lyrics transcribed from the booklet included with the "My Maudlin Career" CD. Parts in brackets were erronesouly left out of the booklet lyrics despite obviously being a part of the song. Sans the bracketed parts, everything else checks out to my ears.
I'm going on a date tonight To try to fall out of love with you I know, I know this is a crime But I don't know what else to do
My love you're in a magazine My love you're doing fine you're on TV You wore my heart out then you ran away From Chicago to Cleveland you made me pay You made me pay
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing I would trade my mother to hear you sing When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing I would trade my mother
On the bus radio 50 ways to leave your lover oh no I laughed at the irony But like the stupid the irony got lost on me Got lost on me
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing I would trade my mother to hear you sing When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing I would trade my mother
You challenged me to write a love song Here it is I think I got it wrong I focused on the negative The pain was too much of an incentive Always my incentive
When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing I would trade my mother to hear you sing When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing I would trade my mother [to hear you sing] When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing I would trade my mother to hear you sing When you're lucid you're the sweetest thing I would trade my mother Oh but she don't know just how far I'd go Would I walk for a hundred miles For a glimpse of your northern smile?
The song is about Stuart Murdoch from Belle and Sebastian. Tracyanne dated him. "When you're lucid" refers to a line in Belle and Sebastian's "This is Just a Modern Rock Song" where Murdoch says "I'm only lucid when I'm writing songs."
You got it.
You got it.
it's definitely "when you're lucid, you're the sweetest thing."
great song. i was so happy to hear about the new album, and i'm very impressed with it.
camera obscura always has a funny way of making a sad love song still seem so damn happy. it's infectious.
I'm almost positive the part "From Chicago to Cleveland you leave me pain, You leave me pain" is actually "From Chicago to Cleveland you made me pay, You made me pay"
Perhaps:
"When you lose it you're the sweetest thing"
and
"a glimpse of your northern smile"
I think the 'glimse of your northern smile' is correct, but I still stand by 'when you're lucid...'.
And you are correct. I've got the CD and the lyrics booklet says "lucid."
And you are correct. I've got the CD and the lyrics booklet says "lucid."
"I laughed at the irony, but like the stupid the irony got lost on me"
and
"You challenged me to write a love song Here it is, i think i got it wrong ... I focused on the negative The pain was too much of an incentive Always my incentive"
I love the guy's vocals at the end, fits in with the song quite well. Great stuff.
I reckon:
You pull my heart out and then you run away
is
You warm my heart up and you run away
also.
i love the line
You challenged me to write a love song Here it is, I think I got it wrong
so much. its ace.
oh wait. someone has the lyrics from the booklet? must be right then.
oh wait. someone has the lyrics from the booklet? must be right then.
Surely it's just
`when you said you're the sweetest thing.'' What's all this aboutlucid'?consider that "lucid" has more than one meaning..
for example, 1. "completely comprehensible" and
tracyanne & co. are nerds, but this is so good.
the "lloyd" of my maudlin career. infectious.
