Who Can Say Lyrics

i never meant for you to get hurt
and how i try, oh how i try
i could never give you just what you deserve
another man would surely learn

i know these words may only serve to twist the knife
but i'll strive to make them heard
maybe it's better now i've gone away
maybe it's not, oh who can say

and though it's hard for me to say
i know you're better off this way

and when i told her i didn't love her anymore
she cried
and when i told her her kisses were not like before
she cried
and when i told her another girl had caught my eye
she cried
and then i kissed her with a kiss
that could only mean goodbye

and though it's hard for me to say
maybe you're better off this way
and though it's hard for me to say
i know you're better off this way

get away

i thought that this songs could possibly actually be saying he's breaking up with her because he doesn't think he's worth her, "i could never give you just what you deserve, another man would surely learn", and how despite this he doesn't know if it was the right thing to do, "maybe it's better now i've gone away maybe it's not, oh who can say" then the part about using the words, as they might just twist the knife, possibly the knife breaking ehr heart, i dont know, thatw as just my immediate thought, and the words being, "i told her i didn't love her anymore she cried and when i told her her kisses were not like before she cried and when i told her another girl had caught my eye she cried and then i kissed her with a kiss that could only mean goodbye"

the verses with him saying how shes maybe beter off this way, how he knows she is, it all seems to add up to him leaving her for her sake. then him saying "get away" is like him saying "leave me, let me get away, so i can get away" for some reason it makes me think of someone confused, someone trying to work things out and trying to be cold.

i realise that was a mess, a total jumble, i just said my thoughts as they came to mind hah. please comment wiht your thoughts (:

This song is obviously about ending a relationship with someone, and with her/him not thinking that ending it is the right thing to do, as they want it to work, but the other half saying how they think its the best thing to do, as they no longer feel anything for them, 'and when i told her her kisses were not like before', and as someone else has caught their eye 'and when i told her another girl had caught my eye', and how they would both be better off this way.

great song!

-cough- Faris' relationship with Peaches Geldof -cough-

Didn't she just up and leave him??

he knows that ending things with her is gonna hurt "i know these words may only serve to twist the knife" (hmm this could also be to do with backstabbing? maybe he cheated: "and when i told her another girl had caught my eye"), but that if he leaves it any longer its going to be worse for the both of them, and is trying to reassure himself he did the right thing, going from "maybe" to "i know you're better off this way"

this is a really great song and more of a single track than sea within a sea was(which is still pretty good but such a shock to hear after the first album, new stuff is way more psycadeliicy, shoegazey) the video, which is on their site atm, is awesome

The middle part starting with "and when I told her I didn't love her anymore" reminds me of Bat for Lashes' "What's a Girl to Do" in terms of lyrics and sound.

it's actually the lyrics from "He Cried" by The Shangri-las. they just switched the gender.

acutally, i just remembered the Shangri-las covered "He Cried"...there's an orignal called "She Cried". that's most likely the one The Horrors quoted.

I believe this song is about breaking up with someone because you think they'll be better off with someone else; shoving them away so that they can find someone who will truly love them and treat them right, because you don't feel like you're enough for them.
