Why Lyrics
you must have been a place so dark you couldn't feel the light,
Reaching for you through that stormy cloud.
Now here we are gathered in our little home town.
This can't be the way you meant to draw a crowd.
Oh, why, that's what I keep asking.
Was there anything I could have said or done.
Oh, I had no clue you were masking a troubled soul.
God only knows what went wrong.
And why you'd leave the stage in the middle of a song.
Now in my mind I keep you frozen as a seventeen year old.
Rounding third to score the winning run.
You always played with passion, no matter what the game.
When you took the stage you shined just like the sun.
Oh, why, that's what I keep asking.
Was there anything I could have said or done.
Oh, I had no clue you were masking a troubled soul.
God only knows what went wrong.
And why you'd leave the stage in the middle of a song.
Now the oak trees are swaying in the early autumn breeze.
The golden sun is shining on my face.
The tangled thoughts I hear a mockingbird sing
This whole world really ain't that bad of place
Oh why, there's no comprehending.
And who am I to try to judge or explain
Oh, but I do have one burning question
Who you told you life wasn't worth the fight
They were wrong, they lied.
Now you're gone, and we cried
Cause it's not like you to walk away in the middle of a song.
Your beautiful song. Your absolutely beautiful song.
Reaching for you through that stormy cloud.

i think this song is about suicide and how someone they knew killed themself. "song" being a metaphor for life, and how they walked away from life when things got tough.
Does anyone know who he is talking about? Was it someone they knew?

very powerful song.. definitely about a young person and suicide and how people mask their pain and how even people who some think are living a perfect happy life go through struggles. I think this person was really good at things they did but couldn't take the struggles and since they hid their pain nobody could help them through it so death was the only answer to them.
This song is so beautiful and deep ='( Makes me so sad, I love this song. <3
My son died on 9/11 of an unintentional herion dose 1 day after his 19th bday. We did not know he was in pain and needed heroin so it could also be from an accidental death. I will always love you Ian my awsome musician and athlete. We did just have your funeral and everybody did come. People think this song was erriely written for you. Your songs will play on, Love, Mom

Although Rascal Flatt's performs the song, there are Song Writers who write the songs. Some artist do write their own songs too but this song was written by Allen Shamblin who also wrote He Walked On Water, I Can't Make You Love Me, Life's A Dance, Don't Laugh At Me and numerous others. Allen wrote this song about a friend that he went to school with, Richard Roddy. Richard was very talented and admired by so many people but came to a very low place in his life when he chose to take his own life. Allen wrote the song while grieving and in honor of Richard. Maybe it will also help anyone else that might become that low to remember that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, all things will pass. Believe in God and yourself to see you through hard times. We all have them and it is life's lesson to teach us how to grow and learn. I know that my most important lessons learned have included pain.

Everytime I think of this song I think of my friend who passed away a year ago this month. It changes your life forever and it's something you will never forget. Though Rascal Flatts did not write the song, they sang it beautifully and captured the essence of what the writers were trying to portray (in my opinion). Miss ya Kels.
seems like this song was written about you.. rest in peace GL<3
Well this song is obviously about a 17 year old who committed suicide. This song is sooo beautiful..it makes me cry. I attempted suicide in August and I almost died.. Luckily, I didn't. It's taken until now to realize that life is so precious and beautiful.. You just always have to have hope. There's ALWAYS brighter days after those dark nights.. <33
This song is so powerful. My stepmother committed suicide when I was five. I still cry over her every once in awhile. R.I.P Kat </3
I definitely agree that this song is written about a loved one lost to suicide with the term 'song' used as a metaphor for 'life'...I lost my brother to suicide in 2013 an until hearing this song it never occured to me that every one has demons nobody else knows of...regardless this powerful song has had a therapeutic effect on my life
