This song is so haunting and sad that it gives me chills each time I hear it. It is quite literally a story about children that find their parents' guns and "play" with them, accidentally killing themselves or another. The line about showing the whites of the eyes is so incredibly tragic and sad.
It seems like the children could be hiding under the bed with their dad's gun while their dad is in the living room beating their mother. They want to scare away the "monsters" (probably a reference to the scary sounds of yelling, screaming, chaos that don't sound human).
