In A Broken Dream Lyrics

Everyday I spend my time
Drinkin' wine,
Feelin' fine,
Waitin' here to find the sign
That I can understand
Yes I am

In the days between the hours
Ivory towers,
Bloody flowers
Push their heads into the air
I don't care if I ever know
There I go

Don't push your love too far
Your wounds won't leave a scar
Right now is where you are
In a broken dream

Did someone bow their head?
Did someone break the bread?
Good people are in bed
Before nine o'clock

On the pad before eyes
Paper cries,
Tellin' lies
The promises you gave
From the grave
Of a broken heart

Everyday I'll spend my time
Drinkin' wine,
Feelin' fine,
Waitin' here to find the sign
That I can understand
Yes I am

I'll sit here in my lonely room

Don't push your love too far
Y'know, your wounds won't even leave a scar
Right now is where you are
In a broken dream

And don't you forget what I say

I'm surprised this song hasn't been put on here earlier...it's so frickin' amazing.

Anyway, I think this is about people who spend their lives dreaming about the opportunities they could have, as opposed to actually going out and living those opportunities--never actually living in reality, but "in a broken dream."

EDIT:

The people choose to lead these sort of lives to keep theirselves from failing or being hurt--"your wounds won't leave a scar."

I believe that ‘in a broken dream’ is about people who live life ‘lightly’. People who don’t commit to anything, who don’t plan ahead, they just live for themselves, in the moment. “Everyday I spend my time, Drinkin' wine, Feelin' fine” Drinking everyday, thinking it makes them happy. “Don't push your love too far, Your wounds won't leave a scar” These people are scared to commit, they’ll choose one night stands over a relationship, for example. “I sit here in my lonely room” brings the harsh reality that while they have no one to hurt them (like they may have been in the past) it’s because they simply have no one.

“On the pad before eyes Paper cries, Tellin' lies The promises you gave From the grave Of a broken heart” This could mean a few things, perhaps love letters from the ex, or perhaps as far as marriage vows.

I believe it serves as a warning to those mentioned above, as well as being a damn good song lol

Here's my take on this awesome song.

The singer is in a depressive, alcoholic, funk after being dumped.

Although he describes himself ironically as feeling fine, he's lost in depression, trapped in the days between the hours. Flowers and buildings grow around him, but time doesn't pass for him, he just leafs through the notes his lover sent to him, waiting to understand.

My Interpretation

I crashed a Rod Stewart party with a friend I pulled up to the parking attendant and asked who's party he said Billy Gaff. Well I knew that was Rod Stewart's manager I worked at CBS Records and would speak to Rod's delivery guy, Ed. So we walked in sat on the sofa. Within minutes we went into the marble bathroom as he sang Just like a Woman. I was living in the moment when he kissed me in a few places. I was wearing a hot pink with black polka dots dress. We left and he and I were walking in the backyard. All I remember is asking him to fix me up with Elton he laughed and I only did this because PG Alana was inside. I didn't want to get her upset. I was in another world I couldn't believe I was there with him. He asked me to come to the Record Plant next night then we were at The Entourage at the bar he walked over and laid his head on my lap and I ran my fingers thru his hair. That's all I remember. In Faces song You Wear it Well, "I blew it without even trying" If he'd been single, it would have been another ending.

Don't push your love too far Your wounds won't leave a scar Right now is where you are In a broken dream man great lyrics :)

I certainly agree with the community about this being a great song but I've got a problem with the lyrics that are posted here (and elsewhere). There will inevitably be problems when an NZ song takes some of its character from a very upfront Brit frontman but:

Surely it isn't "don't push your love too far"? For me, that doesn't make seem to work contextually or linguistically. Must be "luck" rather than "love".

That verse is really scary statement from a back alley fighter. It fits the period.
