Perhaps it is because I've been reading all of the BDSM interpretations of Martin's lyrics on this site but when I listen to this song I can't help hearing a whip cracking in the beginning. Then that leads my sick mind to interpret the song as Martin's response to some girl who came on to him for some D/s action where he's the Dom despite the fact the he's a sub himself. Or maybe he swings both ways, who knows.
@Carinapir I think a lot of what you say is true. I also feel the dark intensity of SM. Something hurts deep down here and the juxtaposition between anger and malice, and desire, revenge. There's a lot going on. I would put good money on them both being switches, with Dom tendencies. I think SM is more Martin's thing though, you know, below ground level.

This is my new favorite Depeche Mode song. It's an interesting relationship dynamic being described. Temptation, desire, wistfulness, pride...a whole lot of emotions rolled up into one really good song.
