How Ya Doing, Emily? Lyrics

Every time you tie your shoes
Every time you put on your hat
Every time you wash your face
It matters
Every time you simply go outside
It means a very great deal

How ya doin', Emily?
Don't you know the things you do
Make a difference to the world?
How ya doin', Emily?
Put your hands together
And we'll make the world a better place

In a boat or truck or train
In an airplane over the sea
Any way you wanted to get there
You'd get there
There's not a thing in the world to stop a person like you
From getting where she will go

And when the cold wind blows
Count your fingers on your toes
It always comes to ten (again and again and again)

How ya doin', Emily?
Don't you know the things you do
Make a difference to the world?
How ya doin', Emily?
Put your hands together
And we'll make the world a better place

Everybody says hello
Everybody opens the door
Everybody stops on the street
When you walk by
Everybody in the world is surely falling in love
With everything that you do

And when the nights are long
Remember, you can sing this song
I wrote it just for you

How ya doin', Emily?
Don't you know the things you do
Make a difference to the world?
How ya doin', Emily?
Put your hands together
And we'll make the world a better place

Cover art for How Ya Doing, Emily? lyrics by Logan Whitehurst

This has got to be a break-up song. Throughout the song, especially in the last verse, the speaker is sardonically saying, "Yes, you really are as great as you think you are." The bridge before the last chorus implies that the speaker was dumped by Emily and not vice versa. The over-the-top upbeat melody and instrumentation is meant to emphasize the sarcasm.

I don't agree with LtAxlerod932. I'm fairly sure this song is written for Logan's sister (Emily Whitehurst). I guess that you could imagine it to be sarcastic or sardonic otherwise, but I think in this case it's literally a song to tell someone they really do matter, and that people care about them. Maybe she was feeling a bit down and Logan thought she needed cheering up, so he wrote her this song. I think it's really nice :)

Song Meaning

@alexisalive Yes, you are correct. (Sorry to be ten years late to this!) When Logan was on the Dr. Demento Show, he said he wrote the song as a birthday present for his sister.
