I think it describes some sort of departure from reality. and maybe a departure from conventional song writing as well. I think the title "departure" works on several different levels.

I'd say departure from life and the lie we tell ourselves about a hereafter. Even with that promise, though, the lyrics indicate a nostalgia for a life that has forgotten us even before it's left our sight.

Maybe dying ..a near death experience. Going to the light. Your entire life flashing before your eyes. Ego dissolution.
