American Dream Lyrics
It was on a wedding day
When my heart began to stray
Never thought I'd make such a big mistake
Throw my life away
I've gone days without food
I've went weeks without sleep
Keeping this in
I've got cuts I can't close
I've got wounds that won't heal
It's all your fault
I've been shattered and wrecked
My hand's covered in blood
Scars on my skin
I forgot how to feel now I'm weak with deceit
My skin is paper thin
We've been through this
Feeling it, keeping it, holdin' it in
We go through this
Over and over again
I go years without tears
In a life with no fear
A life without you
Now I'm breaking my back as
I cover my tracks
My skin is paper thin once again
We've been through this
Feeling it, keeping it, holdin' it in
We go through this
Over and over again
I've gone days without food
I've went weeks without sleep
Keeping this in
I've got cuts I can't close
I've got wounds that won't heal
It's all your fault
My american dream
wasn't ever to lie, steal and cheat, he won't leave, her for this
What's the point?
(I wish they would die)
We've been through this
Feeling it, keeping it, holdin' it in
We've gone through this
Over and over again
(Over again)
We've been through this
Feeling it, keeping it, holdin' it in
We go through this
Over and over again
(Over and over again)
This was not a test
This was all for real
This was not a test
This was all for real
This was not a test
This was all for real

There's a bunch wrong, but I don't feel like typing it all..
this song is about his dreams of having a happy life are extinguished
the lyrics might be wrong at some parts, i just put what i heard >_>
Personally its the best song on "A Shipwreck in the Sand".
I think its about someone who feels that he is making a mistake by marrying her. Then it simply expresses more on how s/he feels. Starvation, suicidal thoughts, and how life would be better if they never met.
I too think this is a great song off this album. I feel that this song is about a guy cheating on his fiance and the regret he feels doing so.
"When my heart began to stray Never thought I'd make such a big mistake"
"We've been through this Feeling it, keeping it, holdin' it in"
This song came across weird to me at first because of the title.. but the way the song starts is perfect, and how it all slows down to get quit for shane to sing is brilliant..
this song could be about two people clearly in love and about to get married, but there are so many things that the guy is keeping in, that he never says,, and it builds up and builds up until it comes out but nothing ever gets fixed or solved.. they just keep going back and forth, but he wont let it go, assuming thats what all these scars that wont heal and cuts that wont close are really refering to his relationship that he is still in but suffering from.
this song is one of my favourite silverstein songs..to me its him and a girl and they were married but not telling each other everything..and everything builds ups..when he says american dream i think its because he was dreaming of having a perfect american life or something like that but it didnt work out..
I think it's a continuation of the story. The man is feeling so angry at his wife for cheating, and he knows the man she had the affair with wont leave her, and wishes they all would die. But he knows other people go through with it and deal. He's trying to cope.
this song is simply amazin, and if ye get the meanin of the song its 10x better <3
I absolutely love this song and I believe it is about cheating, but he's not in the relationship. When it says, "It was on a wedding day," it isn't stated that it's "his" wedding day, but "a" wedding day. He then goes on saying, "That my life began to stray, never thought I made such a big mistake, throw my life away," means that he really didn't want this wedding to take place, as if it were someone he really cared about marrying someone else.
"I've gone days without food, I've went weeks without sleep, keeping this in, I've got cuts I can't close, I've got wounds that won't heal, It's all your fault," He's been really stressing about this and feels that he needs here more than anything, food, sleep, etc. He is also hurt that things couldn't turn out the way he wanted, to be with her and will always have these feelings. "I've been shattered and wrecked, my hands covered blood, scars on my skin," could mean that he's no longer pure for having romantic relations with someone already committed in a relationship. "Now I'm weak with deceit, my skin is paper thin," means that he feels shame this relation and that he is being hurt that he doesn't have her unconditionally to himself.
"We get through this, feeling it, keeping it, holding it in. We go through this, over and over again,” means that they cheat and begin to have feelings for each other but hide it and move on with life more than just a few times, but very many. “I’d go years without tears, in a life with no fears, a life without you. Now I’m breaking my back to cover my tracks,” Had he never met this women his life would go on care free but now every time she decides to use him for pleasure he has to hide all feelings, all evidence that they were ever together and move on. “He won’t leave her for this, what’s the point?” He is telling that her husband won’t leave her even if he found out that she had cheated on him because he knows he loves her, so what’s the point of breaking them up? And the part that he sings “I wish they would die,” is more like him wishing for them to get out of his head and life so he could go on with his life. Lastly, the “This was not a test; this was all for real,” was just him saying his feeling were real, and this wasn’t just a game or test that he failed.
