The Mountain Lyrics

Oh you feel and you taste it and you want to go higher
So what do you do
And so you peak into the mountain where your desire goes
Spilt blood on this place it only echoes true all through the days
And so you peak into the mountain where your desire goes

Oh having the space to know the way it is coming down
Take it on down the line
Oh having the space to know the way it is coming down
Take it on down the line

Well it's hard to get ahead when the center is bleeding
They tear out the middle and they send it all away
Tasteless lead sitting on our tongues
And then we have to worry more about the ones we love
When you see there's smoke there's fire
When you see there's smoke there's fire
When you see there's smoke there's fire
When you see there's smoke there's fire

Oh having the space to know the way it is coming down
Take it on down the line
Oh having the space to know the way it is coming down
Take it on down the line

Oh you feel and you taste it and you want to go higher
So what do you do
And so you peak into the mountain where your desire goes
Spilt blood on this place it only echoes true all through the day
And so you peak into the mountain where your desire goes
Oh having the space to know the way it is coming down
Take it on down the line
Oh having the space to know the way it is coming down
Take it on down the line

Hate to say this, but this song is definitely about drugs.

I'm going to have to agree this song is about drugs. Want to go higher, take it on down the line, spilt blood on the mountain- sounds like addiction. AWESOME song, AWESOME album- maybe my favorite album as a whole in 2009!

Great song!

O the beauty of well crafted lyrics. The absolute drug references remind me of what people say about John Prine. Everybody is sure an illegal smile is LSD, but when the question is posed to Mr Prine he always swears it is not. So i think an argument can be made for such personal revelations in a song, but when juxtaposed with current socioeconomic as well as geo political conditions, all kinds of metaphors come to life. Afghanistan , position as superpower, a society. The phrase "Oh having the space to know the way it is coming down" creates a nice visual for Mcluhan and his thoughts on visual and acoustic space and its impact on the global society.
