In Color Lyrics
I said Grandpa what's this picture here?
It's black and white and it aint real clear
Is that you there? He said, Yeah, I was eleven.
Times were tough back in thirty five
That's me an' Uncle Joe just tryin' survive
A cotton farm in the Great Depression.
If it looks like we were scared to death
Like a couple of kids just tryin' save each other
You shoulda seen it in color.
And this one here's taken overseas
In the middle of hell in 1943.
Wintertime. You can almost see my breath.
That was my tailgun. Ole Johnny McGee
He was a high school teacher from New Orleans
And he had my back right through the day we left.
If it looks like we were scared to death.
Just a couple of kids tryin' save each other
You shoulda seen it in color.
A picture's worth a thousand words
But you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered
You shoulda seen it in color
This one is my favorite one.
This is me and Grandma in the summer sun
All dressed up the day we said our vows.
Can't tell from here but it was hot that June
That rose was red and her eyes were blue
Just look at that smile. I was so proud
That's the story of my life
Right there in black n white.
If it looks like we were scared to death.
Just a couple of kids tryin' save each other
You shoulda seen it in color.
A picture's worth a thousand words
But you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered
You shoulda seen it in color.
Shoulda seen it in color

This is an amazing song. So much meaning. Very sentimental and agreed its all about how a picture says so much yet can fall short on the whole story.
The lines "A picture's worth a thousand words, But you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered" means that you can say a thousand words about the picture and what you think is going on in the picture, but you have no idea what it was actually like unless you were there, and saw it in color. the shades of gray keep covered all the things that you cant see in the picture, like how the people were acting and how they felt and everything. Like when he is singing about being in Wolrd War II, for example. If it looks like they were scared to death, you have no idea how scared they actually were unless you were there with them and "saw it in color" so to speak.
i think this is an amazing song... i totally agree with gmc1323

Such an amazing song. It gives you a lot to think about when considering how the past was.
This is the one song I can listen to and cry. The past is there, but I can't truly go back, unless this song plays
