Stay With Me (By The Sea) Lyrics

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me

Stay with me, my dear
Walk with me, hold me near
It's not as late as it seems, no, no
So why'd you take your love away from me?

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me by the sea
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me

In the morning light or in shades of white
You're the only one tryin'
So what's the meanin' of sayin' goodbye

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me

Hold my hand, my dear
Treat me like you're my ever loving woman
Hey, am I the only one you see?
So why'd you take your love away from me?

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Stay with me

Ooh, stay, baby
Ooh, come on, come on and stay

Cover art for Stay With Me (By The Sea) lyrics by Al Green

I've always loved this song because it has such a sound to it that only Al Green can do, but I can't describe it. It's got a peaceful warm and dreamy feel, just like you would feel if you were at the beach and by the sea. The lyrics always interested me because they're so unique from your typical love song.

The first verse makes you think that he's singing about being with his sweetheart and they're just out for a late night stroll. You hear him say that it's not that late and asking her to stay, but then it becomes apparent he doesn't mean for the night. The woman has left him and he's saying it's not too late, we can still try, so why'd you leave me? The next verse with John Legend basically says "you're the only who tries, the only one like you, so how could you say goodbye?" The third verse says the same thing, asking her to stay and also is saying "am I the only one you see or is there someone else?"

Beautiful song. It takes a new spin on the typical love song in the smooth, laid-back, but still very emotional style of Al Green and John Legend. Instead of a strong, loud sad vocal, it's kind of calm, almost dazed like their entranced by their love.
