I think Its a great song, I'm not saying that its their best, but its really a good song. I've been a Placebo fan for about 8-9 years now, and I think that hey are still doing great and I think there's still much more to come !
About the repetition, I think its their to give he the "right" feeling. I don't know how to say it, but if it wasn't there you won't feel the "determination"... he's battling for the sun and no one can stop him or change his mind

True, the preceding albums were completely depressing and unhealthy, marred by bouts of drug abuse and the like. Meds was a coming clean time, growing up, facing the music, looking back on what life was....and battle for the sun is possibly a new dawn, a new start in Placebo.

Awesome song! Great lyrics! I'm a big fan of Placebo and admire this heavy change. But I think I have some meaning behind the lyrics
Sorry to contradict you all, but I don't think this is about Steve's departure at all. This song makes much more sense when you read it (minus the repitition) instead of listening to it (quicker too!)
I believe "I will battle for the sun" to mean "I will fight for what I believe in"
"You are getting in the way" = "You are trying to stop me"
"I will brush off all the dirt, and I will pretend it didn't hurt" could mean "I will brush off the people that try to stop me, and continue as if it didn't happen" or "after each obstacle, I will pull myself together and keep going," I prefer the latter of these 2
"You are a black and heavy weight," continuing from "You are trying to stop me," it means "You are a burden"
"I will not participate" = "I won't be a part of it," which basically means "I'm not going to be burdened by you any more, I'm going to keep going"
Metaphorically, "'Cause i have stared down the barrel of a gun" = "I will go to war because I know what it's like to stare death in the face" In real terms, it means "I will fight for what I believe in, because I know there is an incredibley high likelihood that I will pay for it, and believe me, I know"

Im not sure really.... Lyrically, its pretty average, but the music is good.
I dont expect much from this album, as much as I love them, it seems that all bands reach their prime and then decline, and I think Placebo might have hit theirs already. Im HOPING its not true, and the album will be brilliant, but hey. You never know.
But yeah, overall an average song, but its not totally terrible.

Meaning-wise.. I haven't really thought much about it yet, still just enjoying the sound. Literally, it sounds like a screwed up, destructive relationship that Brian is trying to get out...

Also it could be drugs (as the Placebo theme seems to center on), the addiction weighing him down (black and heavy weight) and him trying to get clean (battling for the sun).
Anyway, that's just my thoughts - now someone smart should disect it :)

As 'cameo' stated that thankfully they have the same sound, I also am relieved. If anything the drums are unbelievable. There is no significant departure soundwise but it definitely sounds bigger and better. The vocals at 4:56 are epic.

Like most Placebo songs the meaning is open to interpretation by the listener as Brian often has stated in interviews. I can't help but feel this song is closely related to 'Song To Say Goodbye' in sentiment. I look at the lyrics as Brian being very self analytical and critical. I think the battle is for his sanity and...

'Dream Brother' representing his inner battler, 'my killer' perhaps referring to the 'lows' of being depressed and creative stagnation, 'my lover' referring to feelings of positivity and his creative and achieving self. The struggle between the highs and lows of depression in general.
At first impression I was rather annoyed at the I, I, I, you, you, you repetition then it's purpose and the intensity of the music gelled and I realized it goes hand in hand. He's fed up with the dark days. 'Dream brother, my killer, my lover..' I feel is the metaphorical battle between depression and happiness. This song is a powerful affirmation and the album is going to be very interesting.
It is a fine song. I heared some people complaining that it is too "mainstream" and although I agree that it is not typical Placebo song I have to say that neither was "Because I Want You" and still when album Meds came out it was something very different then the single and for me it turned out to be best Placebo album.
Personally,I think this song is written about their ex-drummer Steve Hewiit. It's clear that Brian and Steve are not in a good relationship.There was a conflict between them,which made him leave the band.These lyrics suggest it to me:"you are getting in the way","Dream brother,my killer,my lover"..regretting the past. "I won't stop until I'm done" and "I am the bones you couldn't break" tells that his leaving won't stop them and they'll keep on making great music even without him. Also "I'll battle for the Sun"..Sun,it's has an indirect meaning.In my opinion with "Sun" they mean success and worldwide recognition.Yees,Placebo are famous,but we have to admit they are an underrated band,they deserve more... That's my interpretation.This song proved how talented is Brian Molko not only as a musician but as a songwriter too.So deep meanings in every single song by Placebo,it's so cool you can find your own meaning of his words..<3 I love this song.I can't stop listening to it since i heard it.Pure perfection!

Dream Brother, is one of his most famous songs, so I would assume that Molko is referencing Buckley in some way (perhaps implying that he committed suicide, hmmmm)

'I will battle for the sun' is a great line.
It tells us that the protagonist knows what's right and good in this world and he will try everything to reach it.
But like in every story, there's a villain too.
An antagonist who tries to hold the protagonist back from reaching what he's set out to do.
That antagonist is fighting the protagonist, mentally or physically. Probably more mental torture because how the antagonist tried to win over the protagonist for his evil deeds was the turning point for the protagonist.
'Cause I have stared down the barrel of a gun' shows in what deep shit the protagonist found himself in just because of doing the things he knew were wrong.
'I will brush off all the dirt' as well as 'I am the bones you could not break' shows how resistant the protagonist is. He's not going to be led astray again.
He has experienced what's wrong in this world and he chooses the light, not the darkness. He has seen behind the facade of the antagonist, seeing him as someone who's a fake because they were not true to their words.
The words: 'Dream brother. My killer. My lover' reveals the deep relationship those two persons had with each other. They were very close, but one is on a downhill path into darkness, and the protagonist won't follow. That's what makes them foes.
