The Pharaohs Lyrics

We were married in the mirrored hall
When I was sixteen
You spoke the words,
"I love girls in white leather jackets"
That was good enough for love
It was good enough for me

I listened in
When you thought you were alone
Calling the sphinx
On a tornado's phone
Who knows what you meant
I only heard what I wanted

You said I was your blue, blue baby
And you were right
You said I was your blue, blue baby
And you were right

Wandered the halls of the nighttime
My body burned
My legs ached
But you never came to bed
You just left me there awake
You kept me wanting, wanting, wanting
Like the wanting in the movies and the hymns
I want the pharaohs
But there's only men

I want the pharaohs
But there's only men

You said I was your blue, blue baby
And you were right
You said I was your blue, blue baby
And you were right

I'm a male and I don't think those are unrealistic female expectations.

My Opinion

What a guy! I agree.

It's obviously written from a naive point of view. The storyteller was married or had at least been tied to the guy from when she was 16, she really was just a baby. She fell for the moment and what she imagined love to be. As time goes she realizes this guy doesn't live up to the ideal but she still holds onto it.

I love the lines "Who knows what you meant, I only heard what I wanted" Regardless of age or experience i think everyone has gone through that, probably more than once.

Also, There's the imagery of the Mirrored Hall which is an important element of Mormon marriage ceremony. I'm not exactly sure how this plays into the structure of the song, but i do think it's intentionally mormon. And no, I'm not mormon, i just think that's what's going on there.

I saw her live and she made the comment that song was about "imaginary boyfriends."

"I want the pharaohs But there's only men"

How unrealistic have female expectations of men grown in this society? Here's a possible answer.

Its not unrealistic expectations of men she is singing about. Its about the disappointment of marrying at a young age while she still had an idealized, naive, view of love, and of how her life would be.
