Cheerleader Lyrics
Mention a name, we know (we know)
Appear tame, it shows (it shows)
Please don't feign, the ropes (the ropes)
Always the same, I know (I know)
(I'm cheerleading myself, I should've made it matter)
(I'm cheerleading myself, I should've made it matter)
(I'm cheerleading myself, I should've made it matter)
Go on, let it go, it doesn't mean a thing
(I'm cheerleading myself, I should've made it matter)
Chance and sow, nothing changing
There's no time, to go (to go)
Through the designs, we know (we know)
Never mind, although (although)
Maybe this time, we'll grow (we'll grow)
(I'm cheerleading myself, I should've made it matter)
(I'm cheerleading myself, I should've made it matter)

Go on, let it go, it doesn't mean a thing

No. It's "I'm Cheerleading myself/ I shouldn't really matter." The name of the song is Cheerleader.
I just saw them live. He definitely says:
"I'm cheerleading myself, I shouldn't really matter".
I think this song is about relationships, self-sabatouge....how putting rules on love only kills it. Or just about life in general...trying to predict the future/control it/plan it...and how the more you try to control life, the more you miss the point, and the more miserably you live...because the only thing you can control in life is yourself.
The first verse reminds me of how we attempt to pretend that everything is perfect even if it is not, and the monotony of that. "Mention a name, appear tame, please don't feign (fake it), always the same..."
"Chance and sow" are the two ways that anything occurs. Either by chance, or by planning...or "sowing" seeds...but even through what might seem like change, it all ends up the same... "Nothing changing" (different people or situations, but the same inherent patterns/habits/feelings).
The next verse makes me think of the emphasis so many put on time "There's no time, to go. Through the designs, we know"...deadlines...etc...instead of letting something naturally take its course. Trying to force something before it is ready. In the end realizing it is not the way to go about it and hoping to remember and learn for next time...."Never mind, although. Maybe this time, we'll grow"
"I'm shooting them myself, I should've made it matter" This to me is regret for going about it all wrong. "Shooting" or basically ruining something pure by putting societies pressures on it...and realizing that to just "Let it go" would have been more successful.
I think it's called Cheerleader, to remind us all to just let go and live life...to cheer us along in not making the mistakes mentioned in the song.
Favorite song from the new album. Totally dreamy.
this songs about regret.
that is the most direct and correct interpretation ever. I like it

I agree with the user said it was about a guy trying to make it work but failing. I don't know what "shooting them myself" means though. I guess sense he made it sound like "I'm cheerleading them myself" it's talking about how he is trying to push himself to work on the relationship but she is essentially making himself more miserable by trying to keep a relationship that will never work out.
I know the correct lyrics are up now, but I'm curious if anyone besides me heard it this way:
I should've known myself/I should've made it better.
That's what I had been hearing. :/

Me too.

I think you're hearing what you want to hear in the song. I do that a lot. I listen to a song for a while then look up lyrics to see if I was right and I usually learn a lot about myself in turn. Music has a way of relating to us even when the lyrics seem unlikely to.

ithinkiam, i know exactly what you mean. another thing i do, besides sometimes hearing lyrics the way i want to, is hear a certain tone or the way they are singing something, which often affects my interpretation of how something is meant. also, sometimes what a song means to me can remain pretty much the same for an extended period of time, but, more often than not, it changes, even if only partially or subtly, quite frequently (just as our favorite songs on an album change, as we relate to different ones in different ways at different times). part of...

Excuse me, maybe because I'm not an English speaker, I can't understand this song's meaning, could anybody help me? In my opinion Cheerleading can't be part of the text, I'm quite sure I'm hearing "shoot" or something similar... On the other hand I don't know what "shoot them myself" means... The same about "chance and sow", I read in a dictionary that sow means a female pig O_o?? What has it to do with chance? Thanks :)
He is saying cheer leading- he's trying to encourage himself to make the relationship work. To "sow" means to plant. As in planting seeds. He's talking about giving the relationship a second chance and re-planting seeds (seeds= beginning of a relationship)for it to grow.
