I think the chorus is about how I guess he got screwed over by his last girlfriend and moved on to someone new, but the tables have turned and he wants to leave his new partner for the same reasons he was left. And now he understands, his ex was never the bad guy.

i agree with sillychriss mostly, but take it as he's probably been the one being the "bad guy" and now its happening to him and that's why he says he know what its like to be on the other side.
