Closer to Love Lyrics

She got the call today, one out of the grey
And when the smoke cleared, it took her breath away
She said she didn’t believe 'it could happen to me'
I guess we're all one phone call from our knees
We're gonna get there soon

If every building falls, and all the stars fade
We'll still be singing this song, the one they can't take away
I'm gonna get there soon, she's gonna be there too
Cryin' in her room, prayin' “Lord come through”
We're gonna get there soon

Oh, it's your light; oh, it's your way
Pull me out of the dark, just to shoulder the weight
Cryin' out now, from so far away
You pull me closer to love, closer to love

Meet me once again, down off Lake Michigan
Where we could feel the storm blowin'
Down with the wind
And don't apologize for all the tears you've cried
You've been way too strong now for all your life
I'm gonna get there soon, you're gonna be there too
Cryin' in your room, prayin' “Lord come through”
We're gonna get there soon

Oh, it's your light; oh, it's your way
Pull me out of the dark, just to shoulder the weight
Cryin' out now, from so far away
You pull me closer to love, closer to love

Cause you are all that I've waited for all of my life
(We're gonna get there)
You are all that I've waited for all my life
You pull me closer to love, closer to love
Pull me closer to love
You pull me closer to love
Closer to love, closer to love, closer to love
You pull me closer to love

Pull me closer to love

No one, yet, has really recognized what this song is REALLY about. This is obviously religiously-inspired. Everyone gets bad news at some point in their life, to make it through, some turn to God/Jesus to pull them closer to love.

Oh, it's your light; oh, it's your way [John 8:12]; [John 14:6] (You) Pull me out of the dark, just to shoulder the weight [John 12:35]

This song is about relying on God/Jesus to bring you out of a crisis.

Cryin' in your room, prayin' “Lord come through.”

Cryin' out now, from so far away You pull me closer to love, closer to love [1 John 4:7-21]

As far as the, "She said she didn’t believe 'it could happen to me,'" it's just Mat using a selfish response for the girl. Like most people, bad news comes out of the grey and they don't expect it to happen to themselves.

Now we've gotten rid of all the misunderstanding :)

God Bless

You're right on, codyhill06! Nice job!

Thank you someone finally posted this! This is so true and dead on! Love this song. (:

I just heard the song on the radio -- it's still such an awesome song. Last year I was able to see Mat Kearney perform at a small show in Bloomington, Indiana. I was able to catch him outside for a few minutes and ask him about a few of his songs, and this song specifically. He said my assumptions that this song, like most of his songs, are Christian-inspired were dead-on. That a friend of his was going through a rough time, which led him to writing this song for her.

Mat's an awesome musician and knowing that his...

I love this song. The first stanza says it all, “we’re all one phone call from our knees”, one call of a tragic accident that forces use to run to God for comfort. Those moments seem to happen more often for some people than others, but it’s really in those moments that you can begin to sing the song “the one they can’t take away”. And in those moments when you are calling out to God and are “closer to love” you strip away all of the pretense that anything else in life mattered, humbled by whatever tragedy struck your life, but safe in the eternal arms of a loving, caring God.

The good thing about ambiguous songs {especially Christian ones} that don't necessarily mention a who or what is that the listener can think about their earthly relationships AND the relationship God wants us to have with Him. God loves us just as we would love a husband or wife. Love songs like this can open a person’s mind to just how much God loves us but also be sung as a love song for your bf/gf.

I think the first verse is regarding 9-11. "If every building falls..." Remember the smoke and dust being so "grey" and when it all "cleared". Plus, so many people got the call that love one's were dead. The second verse could be about Katrina. "Down on Lake Michigan" Michigan Street in New Orleans dead ends into Lake Ponchatrain were the flooding was so bad. Just my idea since the first time I heard this song. Love it!

I'm not sure but I think the line in the chorus goes "pull me out of the dark/just to shoulder the 'weight'". Seems like it would make more sense that way.

This is a beautiful song, well produced. I love this new sound of Mat, its more refined but still has the same honest voice we love. I think its about times in our life when we feel down, lost, jaded... in all of this there's a piece of love that pulls us out of the wreckage and puts us back on our feet. I like the way he uses words like "Lord". Beautiful sound!

Lord is not a word, its a Name.

Yes, Lord is a very important name. It all depends on what it means to you.

Mat Kearney was recently interviewed about this song:

"Closer to Love, or 'Closer,' as I sometimes call it. I don't know, that sounds pretty straight ahead. My guitar player said something about there's a phone call... You're always one phone call away from something bad. And I was just thinking about that and, you know, we're all one phone call from our knees. And I just felt, there's like this, something's happened and I think the world we're in... There's this looming phone call that could happen. Whether it's, family member, or job, and there's kind of this crying out for help in the middle of that. And also me finding that in a relationship. In the faith. There's all that goes on that's working there. I mean, who hasn't had that phone call?"

Well, she did get the call, so it's not all philisophical, and the call wasn't good news. And she said, "I didn't think it could happen to me," which could mean all the usuals -- I didn't think I could get pregnant, contract HIV, be told my whole family was killed in a car-crash -- though the last feels not as likely, because it is something that happened directly to her.

At first, I thought he had died, and the lyric was more like, "she didn't think it could happen to me (the guy)". Maybe that's how it is after all, but it feels less likely, with the lyrics this way (with it happening to the girl, not the guy). Also, because he is still saying, at the end, "You ARE all that I've waited for, all my life," he seems to be still living.

I'm thinking she gotten that terrible news about herself, and he is trying to help or comfort her, but she is in a deep shock -- "so far away" -- and he feels "in the dark" with her 'gone', in that way, so he is asking her to stop beating herself up worse ("you've been strong enough") and to let him help her... for both of their sakes ("shoulder the weight, bring me closer to love").

Just heard this song for the first time on VH1 or MTV, somehow... whoa. Came to find the lyrics right away -- I had to know what it meant. And after reading the lyrics, that's my guess!

Sorry for any typos or confusion -- gotta run!

<3, Jaxxy. =)

Uhm, not to burst any bubbles but listen to the song. It's not shoulder the weight, it's just to show her the way.
