My Maudlin Career Lyrics

You kissed me on the forehead
Now these kisses give me concussion
We were love at first sight
Now this crush is crushing
I retraced your steps through the city of romance lazily
I took to the desert with your harshest words and they saved me

I'll bail you out again, I've got the readies
I'm not a child, I know we're not going steady
Your pain's gigantic, but it's not as big as your ego
I promise not to abandon you
Please let me go

I harbored worried feelings like they were worth protecting
You say I'm too kind and sentimental
Like you could catch affection
Oh, in your eyes there's a sadness enough to kill the both of us
Are those eyes overrated?
They make me want to give up on love

I'll brace myself for the loneliness
Say hello to feelings that I detest
This maudlin career must come to an end
I don't want to be sad again
This maudlin career must come to an end
I don't want to be sad again
This maudlin career must come to an end
I don't want to be sad again

This maudlin career must come to an end
I don't want to be sad again
This maudlin career must come to an end
I don't want to be sad again

Lyrics transcribed from the booklet included with the "My Maudlin Career" CD. Parts in brackets were erronesouly left out of the booklet lyrics despite obviously being a part of the song. Parts enclosed in parentheses are in the booklet lyrics despite not actually being in the recorded version. Sans the bracketed and parenthetical parts, everything else from the booklet checks out to my ears.

I felt this song deserved an explanation of what I see they are trying to portrait

First of 'maudlin' is a person who is self pity , a sentimental person who often get like that thru alcohol

Now,... I feel this song is about an old love reunited! They meet again but in between it all she realizes she sees sadness in her ex's eyes sees so much pain and can't comprehend why that persons held so much inside over the years and realizes that same ego that broke them years ago still exist snd will not do her any good to go back to someone who never changed and truly broke her inside.

S used to turn to <alcohol > which was once used to forget her ex then began to be a problem because that was the only thing that would bring her back to happy moments and was the only closure she had to her past for some time

But this time deep down inside she doesn't want to go back to 'sadness, depression, and being seen as a soft broken hearted soul

She doesn't want to go back to drinking her eyes shut She decides to stop being a sad drunk and move on because a love as hurtful as the one she had will only make her loose her mind and depress her.

Beautiful song. My first time narrating what I feel the song portrays

Just saw them last month. They played this song. It was practically a religious experience. Love your narrative.

I take the "career" part to mean her singing career, i.e. writing and singing, primarily about her feelings, and mostly about her relationships.

This song is hauntingly beautiful. It has been growing on me since I first heard it several months ago. Every time I listen to it, a different verse lingers in my mind for days.

Beautiful and alluring songs like this one probably don't have explicit meanings, but I can share my own interpretation, which of course is often heavily influenced by our own experiences.

Based on the correct lyrics found from their album or spotify (the lyrics posted here are incorrect at parts) it would appear this song is about a women who has an intense history with someone that they were deeply in love with. It seems the relationship was toxic in some way and she wants to give up.

It seems that the man she was in love with had some intense sadness or emotional problems and she was sick all the all the sentiment that was not reciprocated, taking on all his emotional baggage on her own. Maudlin is defined as highly sentimental and tearful, which seems to fit in with many individual lines in this song.

This is the sort of song that sticks with me every time I hear it. The way the song flows is so unique, it's just verse after verse of story and raw emotion, just beautiful.

My Opinion

I am certain that there are mistakes here, but I listened and re-listened and still couldn't figure several parts out. The parts I'm least confident of have the (?)s.

Please leave any corrections you have! This post was really just meant as a starting point for people with better ears than mine.

I'm not a child I know we're not going steady your pain's gigantic but it's not as big as your ego I promise not to abandon you. Please let me go

[and also...]

Now I've been hurting your feelings yeah they're worth protecting those say I'm too kind and sentimental like you could catch affection in your eyes there's a sadness enough to kill the both of us are those eyes overrated they make me want to give up on love and I'll brace myself for the holiness say hello to feelings that I detest

[maybe, like you I'm not...

I always thought it was "Now this crush, it's crashing"

Upon listening to it again and again, I'm pretty sure that it's "this" instead of "it's," but I'm not as sure about "crashing vs. crushing." I think I might just think that "crashing" is the line because it makes more sense to me that way.

Also, I think would rearrange the stanzas a bit.

I'm pretty sure it's "Now this crush, it's crushing"

Godammit man this song is way too good.

I hear:

"we were love at first sight now this crush, it's crushing I chased your steps through the city of romance lazily, I took to the desert with your heart, she (?) and deceives me"

I definitely do not hear: "Now we're in love again And you're wherevers"

she says something else, don't know what.

then I think it's "now I've been wearing your feelings, like they were worth protecting"

and maybe it's "I embrace" instead of "I'll brace"... not sure.

i thought it was my modeling career, then i saw the album and song title (and had no idea what maudlin meant [and still don't])

I think it's a pun on that. Maudlin is basically a synonym for miserable, downbeat, weak, sentimental. I also think it's Traceyanne poking fun at herself, as Morrissey does in his track 'Late Night, Maudlin Street'.

seeno is right. Tracyanne said this in an interview.

Maudlin - adjective - 1. tearfully or weakly emotional; foolishly sentimental 2. foolishly or mawkishly sentimental because of drunkenness.

That's what Maudlin means and the career is her relationship that must feel like a chore/job.
