Prophets Lyrics
I was a silent partner, I found
Myself with the rabble who stood on the mound
Hipshot, thinking, but not out loud
There are too many prophets here
On the unlucky side of a stab in the dark
I took it in silence, I took it to heart
I carried it quietly over the wall
There were too many prophets there
I was behind it
One by one by one by one
One by one by one by one
Strike on, zero
Strike on, zero
One by one by one by one
One by one by one by one
I was a silent partner for once
And I had been split into two sections
Here is my heart and here is my song
There are too many prophets here
I am divided
One by one by one by one
One by one by one by one
Strike on, zero
Strike on, zero
I was a silent partner, I know
The part of the forest where you shouldn't go
Now out of the woods and out in the day
I see there's too many prophets here
(One by one by one by one) Strike on, zero
(One by one by one by one) Strike on, zero
(One by one by one by one) Strike on, zero

The song's meaning is definitely very hard to pin-point. I believe the meaning relates to the story of the artist's life.
/I was a silent partner, I found/ /Myself with the rabble who stood on the mound/ /Hipshot, thinking, but not out loud/ /There are too many prophets here/
The singer finds himself silent with a talkative person who is sharing their story. He's thinking, not saying, how there are too many prophets doing the same thing, keeping him silent. There were too many prophets.
/On the unlucky side of a stab in the dark/ /I took it in silence, I took it to heart/ /I carried it quietly over the wall/ /There were too many prophets there/ /I was behind it/
Reluctantly, the singer is hearing all of these story while he is the unfortunate one having to stay silent. He takes these into heart and into secrecy. Yet, everywhere he wants to take it, there are too many prophets.
/I was a silent partner for once/ /And I had been split into two sections/ /Here is my heart and here is my song/ /There are too many prophets here/ /I am divided/
His silence has left him divided. His thoughts go against each other as he tries to think straight, although fruitless. Although mind-boggled, here he his, pouring his heart and mind out into song.
/I was a silent partner, I know/ /The part of the forest where you shouldn't go/ /Now out of the woods and out in the day/ /I see there's too many prophets here/
The singer has gone through the world, experienced its challenges and now knows his way around. Now that he has experienced life, or has gone "out of the woods and out in the day,", he still cannot share his story.
I think the lesson of the song is to go through life making life memorable. We only have a finite number of years on this earth. Seize life, and make it a story worth telling. Be a Prophet.
@HiMyNameisWill : It is a great Interpretation indeed. Thankyou.

I just saw HIMYM season 4 where this song has been borrowed in episode 24 and it totally reflects Ted's life who is protagonist of the show. As per the show Ted has been a person who had everything planned out in his life but when he was left at the altar that year, lost his job and was completely beaten down in his life lily told him to take everything easy and may be not pursue what he is not able to get. Interestingly, Lily despite not having everything planned out...

Interestingly, Lily despite not having everything planned out was the most secure person in the group. She has been with Marshall since forever and had a low paying but stable job that she like. And this is when this song comes up, Ted had more experiences in his life in terms of relationships and career but all his life he has been quite and learning from his past failures and never boasting about his success. However, at this point sitting with lily and others, everyone advising him, he still have hope because now he knows his way around. Now that he has experienced life, or has gone "out of the woods and out in the day, he will be just fine and will keep sailing through life till the shore.
It's about someone who initially was saying not what he believed was correct, but was just going along with the current convention, to not cause trouble.
In the last stanza he's broken free and has the courage to say what he believes, even knowing it may make him feared, hated, or misunderstood (the part of the forrest you shouldn't go).
@DJOctorok: I completely agree with you. When the song started the author was hesistant about his feelings, he was silent partner because he didn't believe in himself. but by the end he is confident about what he believes in and does not need to tell everyone as other prophets do

Surprised this song hasn't gotten any comments. This song really grew on me. its probably my favorite A.C. Newman song.
This is incredibly beautiful ♥
From the title prophets, and the use of the word mount I would assume that this song has some correlation to The Sermon on the Mount, which is found in the New Testament of the Bible. Also the part about the two sections here is my heart her is my song, seems to be saying the writer of this song, in his/her heart disagrees with their own lyrics/opinion. This is what I take away from it, but from the phrases, "Unlucky stab in the dark", "There are too many prophets here", and the use of the word 'rabble' the subject and theme of the song can be something completely different.
The music is beautiful, even if I don't understand what it means good luck to anyone looking for an answer
The first time i heard this song was during the season finale of an episode from "How I Met Your Mother." During that scene the main character was taking a "leap" from one building to another. It represented that even after all the hard 'stuff' that happened to him i.e. girlfriend left him at the altar he still has the power to move on. Also taking that 'leap' to not give up hope on finding his wife and true love.
Although I can't pinpoint the lyrics to that meaning, the song in that context always makes me associate 'Prophets' with taking that 'leap.'
