Lessons Learned Lyrics

Tape holds things that cannot stick
and keep leftovers in the fridge
while lessons learned go down the drain
I can't believe in everything
all the bad names gone
and the good ones were all wrong

and so I stayed up all night
slept in all day
this is my sound
thinking about tomorrow won't change how I feel today

Never let your mark erase
'cause broken legs can be replaced
two steps to the finish line
three sips till I finish mine
a straw will always suck it out
close your eyes and use your mouth
and tell me about your song

And so I stayed up night
slept in all day
this is my sound
thinking about tomorrow won't change how I feel today

My Opinion

[I heard one thing different...]

Tape holds things that cannot stick and keep leftovers in the fridge while lessons learned go down the drain I can't believe in everything all the (band) names gone and the good ones were all wrong

and so I stayed up all night slept in all day this is my sound thinking about tomorrow won't change how I feel today

Never let your mark erase 'cause broken legs can be replaced two steps to the finish line three sips till I finish mine a straw will always suck it out close your eyes and use your mouth and tell me about your song

[My personal opinion is that the song is about the music industry. How record companies will use you and abuse you as long as you can make them money. Its about the lessons one has learned playing music[specifically staying true to the indie spirit] and how they were ignored to sell themselves anyway possible. The song expresses remorse and the music video suggests that matt and kim are just going to be themselves regardless of the consequences and/or what others think]

Just a few things I heard instead:

Tape holds things that cannot stick and keep leftovers in the fridge while lessons learned go down the drain I can't believe everything (and) all the bad names gone and the good ones were all wrong

Then the last verse:

And so I stayed up (all) night slept in all day this is my sound thinking about tomorrow won't change how I feel today

My Interpretation

Judging by the music video (if you haven't seen it go watch, it's kick ass and full of symbols) the song is about how it's weird that we do stuff so traditionally, and how it's considered odd to break loose from the norm.

"while lessons learned go down the drain I can't believe in everything "

Too many rules coming in one ear and going out the other, which ones do we follow? Well nobody knows, so let's make up our own rules, let's run through NYC city naked and make a statement (music vid).

what a great song, i cant get any of their songs out of my head...it sounds like its about writing music and not changing ur music for others or because it sounds different...also, i read they were having trouble naming their band and their albums and songs (all the bad names gone and the good ones were all wrong)... It seems pretty obvious if you interpret the lyrics literally that this is what its about.

For me at least, this song is about how we are supposed to do what we can, as if that will make things the way we want or need them to be in life. Tape holds things you need stuck together, even though they're not really supposed to stick in the first place. We put leftovers int he fridge so they won't go bad, we can eat them later, kind of motherly advice, something a parent would say to their son/daughter when they get their own place for the first time. Yet, even when you do the right thing, what you're supposed to do, we don't always find fulfillment or satisfaction and these life lessons lose meaning or significance and we start to let these things go as what you expected reality to be life comes apart at the seams. You can't believe everything you were told, not just because it might not be true but because it might not make things whole or satisfying to you. People tell you to give things time, that you will get used to change or that things will get better but I feel like they are questioning this. Thinking about tomorrow, that things will become satisfying or that things will get better, does not help you in the present. Eventually you need to find what makes you whole, what satisfies you and makes your life the way you want and need it to be.
