Out From Under Lyrics
Knocked off my feet
The earth moved beneath
The edge of a dream and a nightmare
I opened the door
Fell through the floor
I slipped through the cracks into nowhere
So tell me, where were you
When everything fell down like thunder
I begged you to pull me through
I couldn't get out from under
I took the fall
I took it all
My smile was just an illusion
Cut me I bleed, reveal me I need
I finally broke in the pressure
So tell me where were you
When everything fell down like thunder
I begged you to pull me through
I couldn't get out from under
Left me for dead, inside my head
Couldn't you see that I was still breathing?
Screaming, I reached for you
I couldn't get out from under
Where were you?
I reached for you
The pressure pulled me down
Where were you?
I reached for you
The pressure pulled me
Where were you?
The pressure pulled me
Where were you?
The pressure pulled me
Where were you?
I reached for you

While technically this could be about a romantic relationship, I seriously doubt that it is. Clearly, it seems to be someone's cry out to God. They are going through a hard time in their life, and they want to know why God didn't step in. As Christians, we know that God is strengthening us through our sufferings, but sometimes it is still hard to understand why we would go through it. We may find ourselves questioning God, asking why he would put us through it. This song is clearly about just that.
My favorite from the new album.. great song. the great thing about this song is that it can be taken from a christian and non-christian perspective
Nearly every Christian Rock song can. :)

What I believe the song means to me that someone wasnt there for him when he need them the most, when everything in his life(the pressure) is pulling him down.

This song is amazing. One of Red's best. I especially like what they song they make at the beginning andend of this song. Its kinda their signiture for this album just but to the max. Its just amazing.
Perhaps "Out from Under" is merely a call to act. The song is about a life wasted and lost, longing for hope, longing for help, but to no avail. The person portrayed in this song is your neighbor, your friend, your sibling, your co-worker or schoolmate, a complete stranger. The song is a call to love and give hope to these people. They NEED it. Without Christ's redemption, they will finally break in the pressure. A sad song portraying a sad reality..
wow everytime I listen to this song I imagine a scarey cut scene though who didn't let down from a friend/family member/lover? ah well, Red is always amaze me.
sounds like he was going through an extremely tough time in his life and the person he expected to be there for him (gf/family member) wasn't there to help him
Hmm I really don't know what to think of this song. I really love Red, but this song is different. To me if I had any idea of what I thought it was saying it would be this.
Just like another song by Red, this song doesn't seem like it's about God at all. I feel like it's about either a lover/sibling/friend;
"So tell me, where were you When everything fell down like thunder"
Or about an inner demon of his (again, and yet still different than the last couple of songs dealing with inner demons) that he had listened to and hadn't realized that it was tearing him down until he was almost "spiritually dead";
"Left me for dead, inside my head Couldn't you see that I was still breathing?"
It also sounds like the singer was so depressed and angry that he was driven to cutting himself;
"Cut me I bleed, reveal me I need I finally broke in the pressure"
The pressure being his problems. And yet, this part still bothers me;
"Screaming, I reached for you I couldn't get out from under"
I'm not sure if he's reaching out to a lover/friend/family member or to God, but it doesn't sound like it.
Or maybe it's about something completely different.
Like the comments above me were saying, it could also be about life before God and how people will break under pressure at one point (pressure being their problems) and, despite peoples problems, they don't realize that their dying spiritually each day without God.
hey dudes! You're may all hate me for having an indepth Christian view of this song :P but I don't mind.
"Out From Under" seems to be written concerning the crucifixion of Jesus. This song is arguably the darkest song on the album; if it is written on the crucifixion of Jesus, it is written from Jesus' perspective. Now, I'll pile up the evidence :P
"Now tell me where were you when everything fell down like thunder... I begged you to pull me through, I gotta get Out from Under."
This chorus is focused on abandonment. Jesus cried out on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" which symbolises a similar thing.
Now, where it gets interesting :P
"Cut me I bleed, feel me in need, I finally broke in the pressure."
Jesus was flogged before being crucified, which requires a lot of bleeding and scarring. The "pressure," that the song keeps coming back to seems to suggests the Spiritual pain that Jesus felt on the cross, which led to his death. This seems likely, because in the end, the song doesn't get any better, and the singer keeps screaming, "Pressure!" as if the singer really has died.
"I took the fall, I took it all, last night was just an illusion."
The night before Jesus was crucified he begged God to take away the suffering he was about to endure. The "illusion" was that God would take the suffering away; Jesus knew that he would have to bear it to the end: "Yet not as I will, but as you will." Christian doctrine believes that Jesus took all sin, and this requires a "fall" away from God.
The title itself, "Out from Under," seems to be a desire for escaping death, or, resurrecting.
Good interpretation. It does mean a desire for resurrection, turning us into a new person with a new heart. Although the pain may be incredibly difficult to bear, we will end up submitting to the "pressure" and becoming something new.
