this song to me is about a relationship that is having issues. They know they need to end it but they don't want to. The person doesn't want the other to care about them so much so they could just let it go.

I agree that this about an ending relationship, however, I feel like "try not to save me" means that the person taking the active action to leave is intending to be noble and stop hurting the person they are leaving. "Try not to save me" indicates the other person's flaws. Other lines indicating that the person leaving is the person who really needs the help are "And when I wonder what you're thinking when you stare into space", "You're always watching me to see if your head should hang down", and "I'm not the one." The narrator of the story knows that their partner needs them to help them and this is an attempt to make their partner realize that.
