i'm pretty sure she is not actually singing "my erections" in this song.
I listened again a couple of times and realised this, oops. I'm not sure how one goes about changing lyrics once they're up. It would be fun if she were, though.

It's about being hurt but moving on and learning from the experience - reflections are protection, i.e. thinking over what she's done and what she's learnt from the experience, which will protect her in future, and directions as distractions - she's moving on doing stuff to keep her busy from thinking about it. Also 'love makes you lose your site' and 'only time is a lover's guide' means she's been hurt and is learning from her experience.

i clearly hear "erection" too. The song is about how she can reflect back to her past and learn from her mistakes. Hence, she will not be destructed. Her directions are distractions, meaning that her current focuses may not exactly be what she really wants. They are distractions to her true goal.
according to the digital booklet that came with the digital version of la roux's cd from itunes, the first verse should be "leaves/please be a light filter/shine/make me a shelter..." and, as A.M pointed out before, the end of the first verse should be "all the shadows that i walk in/are just my volatile second skin"
the first verse: she's vulnerable. she needs someone/something to be a filter, to make her a shelter. she feels exposed (search party, floodlight on my face), and her shadows - her past - are her "volatile second skin" - it was a changing time.
chorus: her past shows her mistakes, maybe someone's messed with her, but she knows from her experiences now, and this can protect her in future relationships. not exactly sure what "my directions are distractions/when you're ready, come into the light" means.
second verse: i get a very specific and interesting image from this. she needs help finding something and needs a pathway cut out for her - maybe she's confused about what's going on ("only time is a lover's guide"). the imagery in this section is great!

I have only heard this song today for the first time (but played it 100 times already)... AND it calls me... it's like right now though it's too close to event in my own life so even tho I relate to it in a big way, I can't describe how
I'll just try to guess this line: "reflections are protections" so what she sees in the mirror, her appearance and therefore what everyone else sees, is what protects her. Like if she's feeling down and out she keeps on smiling anyway.. OR her reflections could be if someone is mean to her, it just bounces off and back to person who says it, it 'reflects'.. OR her reflections are just her thinking about things, perhaps all the bad/stupid things she's done which will now keep her from destruction/doing those things again...
