Middle Cyclone Lyrics

Baby why'm I worried now
Did someone make a fool of me
'fore I could show 'em how it's done
Na na na na na
Na na na

I can't give up actin' tough
It's all that I'm made of
Can't scrape together quite enough
To ride the bus to the outskirts of the fact that I need love

There were times that I tried
One for every glass of water that I spill
Next to the bed retching pennies in a boiling well
In a dream that at once becomes a foundry
Of mute and heavy bells
They shake me deaf and dumb
Say someone made a fool of me
'fore I could show 'em how it's done

It was so clear to me
That it was almost invisible
I lie 'cross the path waiting
Just for a chance to be
A spider web trapped in your lashes
For that I would trade you my empire for ashes
But I choke it back
How much I need love
Na na na na na
Na na na

This song is haunting. Easily one of my top 5 Neko songs.

Reminds me of a friend I used to have. She was always trying to act tough and constantly putting up an emotional wall. In reality, she wanted to be loved, but didn't know how to show it or want to admit it.

"Baby why am I worried now? Did someone make a fool of me, before I could show 'em how it's done." This reminds of, how as people, we constantly feel as though we are making fools of or embarrassing ourselves. We'd much rather beat other people to it, and do the criticizing. For some reason, we feel like criticizing ourselves hurts less than having others do it.

I can't believe more people haven't commented on this song! "Say, someone made a fool of me 'fore I could show 'em how it's done"

I love it. Middle Cyclone is an incredible album.

This has already become one of my favorite Neko songs. Ignoring the subject/pronoun disagreement that will fill the rest of this comment.... I think it's about someone who is in love, but cannot or will not make themselves vulnerable. They can't make themselves let down their wall and clearly can't choose to not be in love, so they feel helpless, foolish and, worst of all, responsible for their anxiety because they are hindering themselves by keeping quiet. That's just my take.

I think this song speaks so much to the themes of the album as a whole. She's constantly comparing herself to this force of nature throughout the whole thing, making herself larger than life and comparing herself to an animal.

But then, this song sort of comes like a revelation. She, too, is human and needs to admit, or even accept, "the fact that [she] needs love".

Incredible - as are a lot of the songs on this album. I'm sorry I didn't discover her until this month - missed several chances to see her here in Seattle (with another one or two coming, luckily.

Can't scrape together quite enough To ride the bus to the outskirts of the fact that I need love

Love these lines

Agreed, those are some of the most beautiful lyrics.

I picture this song as the tornado who reaches her mid-life crisis. She's blown through different relationships not exactly understanding how she's left a trail of wreckage behind. This is definitely the song of a woman who has lived long enough to mistrust her judgment after alternately screwing the really good guys and being duped by a few con artists.

I love the image that she wants to be a "spider web trapped in your lashes" as though all her wiles are going to be swept away.

One of my favorite lines of all time:

"it was so clear to me, that it was almost invisible"

doesn't get much better/truer than that

This is a song about having walls and being so terrified of being played as a fool, that you won't let yourself fall in love. You will act tough so you don't have to embarrass yourself even though you need love a lot more deeply than some people. You masquerade that need with 'strength' by making the other person look like a fool before you do.

"Say someone made a fool of me".. this line is an anxious thought that we trick ourselves into believing when we can't believe that someone really loves us. We retaliate with very blatant, mean responses to protect ourselves. The thought that we became a fool triggered all of it but our greatest desire is to forget all about our anxieties of love and fall in.

A beautiful song. Especially for those of us that "choke back" how much we need love in the exchange for 'appearing strong/dominant'.
