Orchids Lyrics
I won't get mad and I won't break in two
Because I understand you
Now take this change
And let my clothes soak with rain
As I study orchid blues
And some can't live
Unless they feed on fallen leaves
And so you'll let me down
To come alive
When you comfort me
I've watched you change
I've heard your words rearrange
Played back from the start
And if I did teach you anything at all
I hope it was to love with all your heart
And lie open wide
With imperfect symmetry
And so you'll love like you
And I will love like me
And to be reborn
They have to go to sea
And so, angel, you will have to set me free
Because I understand you
Now take this change
And let my clothes soak with rain
As I study orchid blues
Unless they feed on fallen leaves
And so you'll let me down
To come alive
When you comfort me
I've heard your words rearrange
Played back from the start
And if I did teach you anything at all
I hope it was to love with all your heart
And lie open wide
With imperfect symmetry
And so you'll love like you
And I will love like me
They have to go to sea
And so, angel, you will have to set me free

This song is absolutely beautiful. I feel like she's talking about an ending relationship, whether it be friendship or a closer relation to this person. It sounds as though she may be comparing them to "orchid blues" so-to-speak, someone is changing, maybe as in bloomig, becoming a completely new person.. Maybe someone she doesn't recognize anymore "I've heard your words rearrange," but she's hoping that atleast she could teach them to love unconditionally "love with all your heart" and to "lie open wide" as in lay it all on the line, hold nothing back, "with imperfect symmetry" - as in it's okay to have differences, just be yourself. "You'll love like you" and "I will love like me." I feel the last few lines relate to herself, "to be reborn, they have to go to sea" maybe she is being reborn and changing herself, for the better. "And so, angel, you will have to set me free" - she needs to be set free, she needs to do this on her own. A new start from this.
I think this is about a relationship or perhaps a friendship after a relationship but they are growing apart and changing until they are no longer perfect for each other and even through they both still love the person the other has become, they can no longer be and must let they're friendship free.
Also, the beginning of the song shows she is not upset about the change, she understands. "I won' break in two" She is saying take the change, maybe while studying "orchid blues" she's found a lot of similarities and she finds it comforting/helps her cope. "And some can't live unless they feed on fallen leaves" Maybe she is sayin some people can't live without a shoulder to lean on, and maybe she depends on the comfort from this person.
I edited the lyrics some... there were a few mistakes. Such a great song by Maria, I have been waiting for it to come out for a while now!

I think those lyric corrections are all right! And I also agree that this is about the end of a relationship, where both parties still really care about one another, but have realized that they can't stay together and keep moving forward in their own lives.
first comment whoo! such a beautiful song,so pure. i think orchids are a metaphor for something..
i think this is about a friend that is changing, and the love she talks about is purely platonic and pure like a flower...

and it's aboout a friend who's changed into something they're not, or that the person doesn't agree with, and the person's tried to reform them back into what they were before, like a dying orchid going back into it's former beauty or something...

is her accepting what they are. and the angel setting her free is her own good will letting go on...

that's my interpretation. could be completely wrong=]
