Smokestack Lightning Lyrics

Ah, oh, smokestack lightning
Shinin', just like gold
Why don't ya hear me cryin'?
Ah, whoo hoo, ooh...
Whoo...

Whoa, oh, tell me, baby
What's the, matter with you?
Why don't ya hear me cryin'?
Whoo hoo, whoo hoo
Whoo...

Whoa, oh, tell me, baby
Where did ya, stay last night?
A-why don't ya hear me cryin'?
Whoo hoo, whoo hoo
Whoo...

Whoa, oh, stop your train
Let her, go for a ride
Why don't ya hear me cryin'?
Whoo hoo, whoo hoo
Whoo...

Whoa, oh, fare ya well
Never see, ah, you no more
Ah, why don't ya hear me cryin'?
Ooh, whoo hoo, whoo hoo
Whoo...

Whoa, oh, who been here baby since
I, I been gone, a little, bitty boy?
Girl, be on
Ah, whoo hoo, whoo hoo

I can't believe there aren't more comments on Howlin Wolf. I'm just barely getting into these really old blues but c'mon guys. To me the smokestack lightning is a reference to smoking. Smoking anything really. He's saying that she can't hear him crying because he isn't. That's kind of what the blues is about isn't it? Go have a cigarette or whatever and move on. That's how I interpret it.

I agree socialpulse, more people should discover and fully appreciate the blues and it's early purveyors. Howlin' Wolf is one of the truly great bluesmen. Along with Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker and about twenty others these guys shaped the sound of music up to 2013 and beyond. As for Smokestack Lightnin', I think it's more about another mule been kickin' in Wolf's stall.

My Opinion

steveba got it right, another mule been kickin' in Wolfs stall. So he went out at night up on the hill and looked over the train track and when the train came down the flames were coming out of the stack, looked like gold; those embers. talkin' to those embers and then thinkin' bout putting her on that train outta here. That's the story Wolf told.
