This songs meaning is pretty obvious. It's about having a romance when you were younger, and promising that you'd continue where you left off after you finish college. However when you come back, you realize that everythings changed, and it's not the same as it was before. When you left you thought that everything would start right where you left off, but it hasn't, and you're right back where you began. Now the person that you thought would wait for you as moved on, and you're wondering what would have happened if you stayed together, and how sometimes things don't always go the way as planned.
