Obstacles Lyrics
Let's say sunshine for everyone
But as far as I can remember
We've been migratory animals
Living under changing weather
[Chorus]
Someday we will foresee obstacles
Through the blizzard, through the blizzard
Today we will sell our uniform
Live together, live together
[Verse 2]
We played hide and seek in waterfalls
We were younger, we were younger
We played hide and seek in waterfalls
We were younger, we were younger
We played hide and seek in waterfalls
We were younger, we were younger
We played hide and seek in waterfalls
We were younger, we were younger
[Chorus]
Someday we will foresee obstacles
Through the blizzard, through the blizzard
But as far as I can remember
We've been migratory animals
Living under changing weather
Someday we will foresee obstacles
Through the blizzard, through the blizzard
Today we will sell our uniform
Live together, live together
We played hide and seek in waterfalls
We were younger, we were younger
We played hide and seek in waterfalls
We were younger, we were younger
We played hide and seek in waterfalls
We were younger, we were younger
We played hide and seek in waterfalls
We were younger, we were younger
Someday we will foresee obstacles
Through the blizzard, through the blizzard

I've first encountered this song in Life is Strange. Such a powerful song :)

To me this is a coming of age song.
First four verses:
Even though it would be hopeful , maybe even naive ( lets say ) to wish sunshine( happiness) for everyone and forever this cannot be the case ( but as far as.. ) . Our feelings and circumstances change like the weather, we look for sunshine because its not always there the same way animals migrate in search of it so sunshine inherently cannot last.
Second four verses :
In the spirit of the first four verses, mistakes will be made and feelings will be hurt. Today we will have to sell our uniform to continue living but we are living together. And for that there is hope that in the future we will avoid the obstacles, we will understand ourselfs better and will have to give away less.
We played hide and seek in waterfalls.. we were younger :
We were once young and unware of the pains and the sorrows, we only knew happiness, how to play and enjoy ourselves. The waterfalls set up an ideal dreamy environment, pure of essence, something that we had to lose when grown up. ( This part of the song is emphasized heavily, persistent like grief of the lost childhood. It is obvious that everyone was younger at some point so emphasizing at a commonplace fact as this makes us really think about it, remember what being younger actually meant. )
The song finishes once again with the hope that even though we are now adults living life unsheltered by parents and childhood naivety we can still hope to be stonger in the future and avoid obstacles.
wow... first post! can't believe noone else has commented - but I don't know how well-known Syd Matters is and I guess the majority of this guy's fans might be french. I just got sent this song by the person I love and for me it's one of the most incredibly beautiful meaningful chilled-out songs I have ever heard. My interpretation is that he's talking to his lover, who he currently can't be with properly due to the 'obstacles', perhaps involving changing places, hence they've "been migratory animals, living under changing weather". The hypnotic soft guitar + those sorrowful sustained notes sound like melancholy memories of happy times, which goes along with "let's say sunshine for everyone" and the cool "we played hide and seek in waterfalls". I guess these good times are not lost on him, and he's still got hope that they'll free up their blizzard-torn lives by 'selling their uniforms' and 'forseeing the obstacles' and have a happy ending together. This isn't a million miles away from my life story so I guess this song made quite an impression on me and I felt compelled to write something on this website for once! Well, thanks to anybody who read this, what do you think? Really an amazing song!
I learned about Syd Matters upon the release of his US record. If I understand correctly, the eponymous American debut was a collection of songs from his two European releases. I've since tracked down those releases as well as his most recent record, "Ghost Days."

Syd Matters is now one of my most cherished artists. This song, along with "Lost Bird" and "Middle Class Men" are among my favorites.

Definitely an under-appreciated talent!

cute lyrics lol, the way it comments about struggles in life and the nostalgia for something simpler
The Song is the meaning of moving on and growing up, The First verse means that we are kids and we are playing, enjoying life as it is. The Seconds verse is going through teen and early adult life, you impact many obstacles and move through them and come out on top. The Third verse is late in life, remembering you early life and how much fun it was, but the memories keep slipping away and hiding in the waterfall of life. The Forth verse is death, you foresee the obstacle but you can't push through it, and thats why the stanza had 2 lines instead of 4.
I honestly would want this played at my funeral
