Dimming of the Day Lyrics

This old house is falling down around my ears
I'm drowning in a river of my tears
When all my will is gone you hold me sway
I need you at the dimming of the day

You pulled me like the moon
pulls on the tide
You know just where I keep my better side

What days have come to keep us far apart
A broken promise or a broken heart
Now all the bonny birds have wheeled away
I need you at the dimming of the day

Come the night you're only what I want
Come the night you could be my confidant

I see you ON the street and in company
Why don't you come and ease your mind with me
I'm living for the night we steal away
And, I need you at the dimming of the day
Yes, I need you at the dimming of the day...

Cover art for Dimming of the Day lyrics by Bonnie Raitt

This is such a gorgeous song, well written and well performed. The harmony is beautiful. It has such a melancholy feel, though. It seems there has been a breakup: "What days have come to keep us far apart A broken promise or a broken heart". Such longing, and such love, is expressed in the first verse. But what really pulls me in are the lines: "You pulled me like the moon pulls on the tide, You know just where I keep my better side". In this day where so many song express anger and sex, this expression of desire and need from a softer side is so appealing.
