Eight Letters Lyrics

The first letter I wrote you was way too long
Way too crazy, way too scary, way too sad
The second letter I wrote you was way too short
Just said, "I love you, baby. Please come back."
The third letter I wrote you was right down the middle
Somehow it didn't quite sum it all up.
The fourth letter I wrote you, I did the best that I could do
But we both know that was never enough.

I had nothing nice to say,
I said it anyway.
Somehow it made me feel better.
Oh, but in the end, I guess,
It was probably for the best
That I never sent you those letters.

The fifth letter that I wrote you was one big, long joke
You probably wouldn't think was very funny
The sixth letter that I wrote you was a strictly business note
Requesting you send me back those last two months rent money
But the seventh one was magic, it was totally romantic
it would have made your little boxer shorts melt
But the eighth time I tried, I swear I couldn't even write.
I just curled up and cried all by myself.

I had nothing nice to say,
I said it anyway.
Somehow it made me feel better.
Oh, but in the end, I guess,
it was probably for the best
That I never sent you those letters.

-- Eight Letters, this was the first song that got me into Paul's music. It was also the only song to get me though a tough break up.

-- "I love you" is spelled out with "eight letters". It's a really simple song name that has a deeper meaning to it than you think.

I interpret this as how Paul tried hard to think of how to be real with someone he had feelings for. He came up with multiple (8) times to write her how he felt, some were cliche. He couldn't find anything better to say or come up with. Paul "said it anyway" sounds like with no regrets you follow your heart and gut. Only to feel alone again, in the end it was just for the best. The best part of the whole song is when he said that it was for the best that he NEVER even bothered sending the letters. It's almost like a major plot twist in a movie or something to that effect. He never sent the letters he wrote or anything but he feels better all of a sudden. Great song! Thanks Paul!
