Ray Gun Lyrics

Did you hear the news?
Saw it on tv
Now ray guns are not only just the future

What are we to do?
Where are we to go?
With all the planets spinning fast around us

Will someone come and save my life
I'm caught under the weight of all this doggone life
I want a pretty little life
Will someone pull me out tonight
I'm stuck inside the walls of all this inner strife
I want a pretty little life

Just a drop of blood
Floating in the air
And nothing but the angles of my future
What are we to do?
Where are we to go
With all this beauty stretching out behind us?

Will someone come and save my life
I'm caught under the weight of all this doggone life
I want a pretty little life
Will someone pull me out tonight
I'm stuck inside the walls of all this inner strife
I want a pretty little life

I want a life
I'm caught under the weight of all my life
Want a pretty little life

Will someone come and save my life
I'm caught under the weight of all this doggone life
I want a pretty little life
Will someone pull me out tonight
I'm stuck inside the walls of all this inner strife
I want a pretty little life

i think this song is about... personally, it may not be the meaning, but just what it means to me well, the phrase that's significant to me is "i'm stuck inside the walls of all this inner strife, i want a pretty little life" strife is an angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues

well, i think she's torn between sticking with her morals or just living, and which would lead to a better life. she wants a 'pretty little life' she seems like she wants a perfect lifestyle, her ideal life

an example would be, should she just live her life freely, act on a whim and hook up with someone or should she be moralistic and wait for a relationship, because that's really what she wants

'will someone come and save my life..' that line may mean, like i'm stuck in thought, self doubt, procrastination "what ifs".. and many self induced hinderances that prevent her from having a life, and that she wants someone to take her out, to parties, social events perhaps, someone to break this rut that she's in.

My Opinion

I think it's about a girl who's coming of age and is overwhelmed by having to figure out what to do with her life. She always put off thinking about it, treating it as something in the future that she doesn't have to deal with yet. The ray gun symbolizes this because it's futuristic and unreachable, but now similar things are actually being developed. She can no longer leave things to the future, because the future is now. She feels like everything keeps going around her and rushing her while she remains confused ("all the planets spinning fast around us") and like there are too many "angles" that her future could take and none seem more appealing than others ("all this beauty stretching out behind us"). Thinking about all this makes her feel trapped and weighed down, and she wants someone to come and figure it out for her or make her not have to figure it out at all, so that she can just have "a pretty little life" without having to do any work to create such a life. I think a lot of high school and college students have this sort of crisis and just want an easy way out.

My Interpretation

Let me make the obligatory "why hasn't anyone commented on this song yet" post.

But seriously, this song is fantastic.

I've always related this song to coping with domestic dysfunction or domestic abuse. Or perhaps a marriage gone bad, as told from the perspective of the wife. Either way, the woman is living a life way more complicated than she feels she can handle.
