So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I'm getting lost in your curls
I'm drawing pictures on your skin
So soft it twirls
I like your looks when you get mean
I know I shouldn't say so but when you
Claw me like a cat, I'm beaming
I like the way you squeeze my hand
Pulling me to another dream
We should dream
I'm getting lost in your curls
I'm getting crushed out on the things
that only I should see
They're not for boys, they're just for me
Hurry to talk, from far away
I can't see you
You curl your fists when you pull your hair
When we're alone, I wanna say
Let's just stay in, no one's here in our apartment babe
Put on the dress that I like
It makes me so crazy, though I can't say why
Keep on your stockings for a while
There's some kind of magic in the way you're lying there
I'm getting lost in your curls
I'm getting rushed back on a whim
Our breath gets weird
Back to the time when we were green
I know we have changed
But I still grin 'cause I can wake to see you
Back to the time I touched your hand
When I was so scared to look that mean
I think it's weird
I'm getting lost in your curls
I'm getting crushed out on the things
that only I should see
They're not for boys, they're just for me
When we do talk from far away
It's so hard for me
Only to get the urge to kiss you there
When we're alone, I wanna say
Let's just stay in, no one's here in our apartment babe
Put on the dress that I like
It makes me so crazy, though I can't say why
Keep on your stockings for a while

Keep on your stockings for a while
There's some kind of magic in the way you talk about your
Blue eyeshadow
It's not exactly blue though
I refuse to call it
Anything but your blue
I'm drawing pictures on your skin
So soft it twirls

I think I'm gay for them...really
i am gay for them
This is what love is like.
lust.
The instrumentation on this song reminds me of the Zora's Palace in Zelda.
Do they ever make you so happy at times, you just want to melt into a puddle? It's such an incredibly beautiful song. Once again, they managed to illustrate love verbally...without once using the word "love." The imagery associated with this song makes me glow.
Yes! I get that feeling whenever i listen to this song
I think on the part where it says, "Back to the time I touched your hair When I was so scared to look that mean, I think it's weird" I think it should be, "Back to the time I touched your hair When I was so scared you'd look at me, and think its weird."
Exactly. I couldn't agree with you more.
I feel like that fits in perfectly.
He's self-conscious about his behavior with her, he doesn't want her to judge his ways or think he's weird for playing with her hair.
I love it.
Wow, WOW, thanks guys... All this song will ever remind me of now is cunnilingus.
I know right?!
I can't get over how many love songs AC can manage to write without ever actually using the word "love." Yet they manage to be the most meaningful and image-inducing of them all. It's magical.
this song is so beautiful

I'm getting lost in your curls. I'm getting crushed out on the things that only I should see; they're not for other boys, they're just for me.
When you two talk from far away, I can see you, you curl your fists and you pull your hair. When we're alone, I wanna say: “let's just stay in, no one's here in our apartment babe.”
Put on the dress that I like. It makes me so crazy, you know I can't say why. Keep on your stockings for a while. There’s some kind of magic in the way you're lying there.
I'm getting lost in your curls. I'm getting rushed back on a whim; our breath gets ribbed. Back to the time when we were green. I know we have changed, but I still grin 'cause I can't wait to see you. Back to the time I touched your hand; when I was so scared to look that mean, I think it's weird. I'm getting lost in your curls. I'm getting crushed out on the things that only I should see; they're not for other boys, they're just for me.

This is such a sad song, because it's about Avey and Kria Brekkan's divorce.
Think about it:
The whole song is a guy watching his sleeping former lover, getting lost in her curls and dreaming of a simpler time when they were still together.
Back when we were green: means the opposite of blue (sad), he's looking back on better times.
She has clearly gotten over him, evinced from the line "I know we have changed But I still grin 'cause I can't wait to see you".
That's why they've never played it live, and attributed that to something like a "missing sampler"
"Green" actually often means new. Not good, or even still together.

I think that line is about how nervous he was with her at the beginning of their relationship. And the whole song is about how he's still completely enthralled even after all this time.
