Chinese Lyrics
This song gives me such a warm and nostalgic feeling, not really sure why. It perfectly captures the feeling of being in a relationship where every moment spent together is special, even if it's just getting some Chinese and watching TV. Lily has such an expressive way with her lyrics, as she is able to paint such vivid pictures with her words.
ive come to realise this is a selfish song even though i love lily allen. my ex told me this song reminded him of me. why? he dsnt want to be with me but is not willing to let me go but leave me hanging. i dnt 'want' anymore, it's not i don't 'need' anymore. I know it doesn't seem so fair. yes it's not fair at all.

The song does say 'a chinese'. It's common in the UK to say 'a chinese', meaning chinese food. We'd say let's get a pizza, or a curry or a chinese. It's just what we say when we get take out food.
I love this song. Personally, I think it's about an idea relationship she has in her head. Possibly a real one. It's really warm and homely feeling, aspiring to normal things that people want in a relationship. Comfort and companionship. I love how British the song is too, the referances are just very typical, such as taking the dog for a walk, having beans on toast and a nice cup of tea, right down to getting a chinese on a night and watching some tv while curled up with your partner.
This song reminds of when it's just me and my mom and we're sitting around eating chinese food, while watching a tv show we both enjoy:) It also reminds me that even though we have our ups and downs she'll still love me.
Also, not ALL Americans are ignorant. Though, I've never heard people say we'll get "a chinese" but when I saw it here in the lyrics/heard it in the song I instantly knew she meant we'll order/eat chinese food. I'm not trying to be all offensive and stuff, but It can be kind of hurtful when you say Americans are so ignorant of blah and blah because you're making it sound like EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of us who live here are which is not true. You just unfortunately meet the Americans who are:) (No offense)
what does she mean by "a Chinese"? is that just the british way of saying chinese food? i'm noit being sarsactic and it may seem like a stupid question, but i really don't know. just message me if anyone has the answer. :D
i'm pretty sure it's just a british way of saying chinese food. just the way they say "let's go get a curry," when referring to indian food.

heh, bless, that's a sweet question. yes, just the british way :)

Lol, that is how us British say it. I'm going to get 'a chinese' or I'm going to get 'an indian' is how we talk about getting food take aways. I never realised that you didn't say that over in the USA...

she doesnt say "a" chinese it just sounds like she does because of the way she sings. i have the album and it has all the lyrics in the insert, and it says she's just saying "and we'll get chinese" as in chinese food
I immediately thought about my mom when I heard this song. I've lived away from home before, but I recently moved overseas and I really miss her. It will be so nice when I fly home and get to hang out with her again.
That's my personal take, but the lyrics can definitely apply to romantic relationships, too. Really it's just about loving someone and needing them around, and missing the comfort they give you.
:]
the correct lyric IS "a chinese", it's quite common for typo's to be made even on the official album sleeves.
the song is about her mother, she's talked about it in many interviews :)
my favourite line is
"I know it doesn't seem so fair, but I'll send you a postcard when I get there"
I'm not quite sure if by "not fair" that she means it's unfair that she gets to travel the world and go to all these crazy places that her mother does not get to go to, or if she means that it's unfair for her mother when she (Lily) is away from her so much. I hated this song at first but it's finally grown on me and it's really cute!
the latter is correct; the first one wouldn't make sense seeing as her mom is an actress. :P

"not seem so fair" to me means she (Lily) can't share most her time with her mother. When she needs her mother, she can come home, while her mother can't do anything when she needs her daughter but waiting a phone call or her coming back. Anyway, i love this lovely song. It reminds me of my mother living far away from me. I miss her.

Yeah she means we'll get a chinese as in we'll get some chinese food and watch tv
It's about her mother. Saw her in concert last night, and her mother was in the audience, and she said it was dedicated to her. Plus, it just makes a lot more sense for it to be about someone she's not in a relationship with.
Very quirky! To me its the opposite of what she's saying...Drags herself round working and all thats on offer at the end is some dumb-ass making beans on toast, a nice cup of tea, ordering Chinese in for dinner and watching TV. Tomorrow, same routine except i'm not coming home so its dog for a walk & a chat in the afternoon but this relationship is sooo boring i'm off to bed - be a nice love & make the beans on toast / tea / book dinner & switch tele on...Next weekend (2nd verse)...same routine...thats all that happens in this relationship...poor love... When I get home - back to being me - (cause i'm not being me with this boring routine) - I'll send you a postcard...not fair on you but neither is what you contribute....If you think I'm content with that as a life routine - see you...Jimmy...
