God Said Lyrics

Nearly everyone I know claims to have heard your voice
And every time they do, I know I should rejoice
Because one day I'm sure you’ll break your silence
And speak just to me
But I feel like time's running out
And my heart, my heart is filling with doubt
And god said

I don't dwell upon you, I dwell on something else
And I am not really here so get over your self

I've tried to follow every rule they said you handed down
And spread the sacred testimony all around
And still the others seem to have your ear but never will I
Have I displeased you somehow?
I can't, I can't help feeling left out
And god said

There's no anger in me, you must mean someone else
Cause it's not me that you see, you're looking at yourself
And I won't give you a prize instead of someone else
Cause I don't play favorites, so get over yourself

Is it my fear, is it my pride, is it my vanity?
Should your name just be denied to save my sanity?
What is the price I need to pay to have
What others seem to grasp so easily?
Pity your servant your slave
Who'll kiss, kiss your feet to be saved
Save me, save me...
And god said

You are not serving me, you're serving something else
Cause I don't need to be pleased, just get over yourself
You can't suck up to me, I know you all too well
But I don't dwell upon you, so get over yourself
Cause you're not praying to me, you're praying to yourself
And you're not worshipping me you're worshipping yourself
And you will kill in my name and heaven knows what else
When you can't prove I exist so get over yourself

Cover art for God Said lyrics by Todd Rundgren

It speaks to God's perspective on the nature of man to continually misinterpret Him... to hypocritically claim to speak for Him while serving ourselves which reveals an apparent actual non-belief that He is who we say He is. If we believed then we would actually serve Him by loving others and not ourselves. It contrasts the concepts of servant and slave and reveals the author's own double-mindedness about which one that he is. It suggests a works-based worship-for-reward mentality in the author. It speaks to a lack of faith that there will be reprecussions for misdeeds and pinpoints said lack of faith as being at the root of all evils done both in and apart from God's name. If not lack of faith then lack of reverence and sheer brazen stupidity. It also reveals that one who honestly seeks God has a better chance of finding Him but that they still may not fully appreciate nor honor what they have found. It reveals that God is no respecter of persons, that He abides where faith exists, that He will not force Himself or belief in Him on anyone, that He is not angry and that He is not our problem, we are our problem. It also reveals that listening in prayer is more important that talking. Selfless love is worship.

That was brilliant, and eloquently well said. Keep writing, Corevoice.

@corevoice, Todd Rundgren is not religious at all. "God Said" is from his album, Liars, and this song is clearly a part of the album's theme. From the liner notes:

"All of these songs are about a paucity of truth. At first they may seem to be about other things, but that is just a reflection of how much dishonesty we have accepted in our daily lives. We are raised from birth to believe things that cannot be proven or that are plainly not true. People will often brag of their honesty, when there is so much...
