The Watcher Lyrics

Darkness...
Fear...
Life...
Cold...

Left alone with no will
Walking in footsteps of the fallen
Blinded by lack of reason
Indulging the tales of doom

...Farewell,
May the darkness bind them
No one will
Remember the pain when we are...

Desolate...
Unconscious...
Lost...

Where lays the ones I've slain?
Did I become any wiser?
Will their anger hunt me down?
Did I sacrifice in vain?

...Farewell,
Hear the sound of solitude
No one will
Walk the bridge, to darkness overcome

Settlement...
Trust...
Relief...
Dawn...

Guide me, watcher in the skies
Transform the forces of the dead
In my dreams I'll hunt them down
I now know the truth

This strikes me as a nihilistic interpretation of modern life in general. We're born, we live, we die. What do we get from it? What does it mean? Does anything we do even matter? And as the darkness falls upon us, did anything we do change anything of value?

Simplistic interpretation, but this song touched my heart enough to feel that it was worth it.

My Interpretation

I was told and i can't remember where, but i was told this song is from a story of an ancient battle. Where is the loosing side's leader had been killed, From there , the next in line was forced to take over. However, the battle was lost. So he, the next in line sat under a tree, powerless to do anything to change the course of the battle. So as he sits there, beaten and bruised himself, he reflects on his life. The battles he had paricipated in and won before this one. The lyrics of this song are probably the thoughts he had as he watched his force die and loose. This is a beautiful song. But depressing as well if one thinks of it in those terms. I was an infantry squad leader in iraq and Afghanistan. I felt this way a few times. It was hard to gauge winning and loosing. When we won, at times it was had to determine what had been won. In those times, that question felt very much like a loss. Years later, my decision making is much the same way. Winning verses loosing. Read the lyrics and apply the story and logic to it as i have mentioned here and it will make sense. It does to me.
