Taste Lyrics
We'll feel sublime.
Am I really all the things that are outside of me?
Would I complete myself without the things I like around?
Does the music that I make play on my awkward face?
Do you appreciate the subtleties of taste buds?
My friend and me were having laughs
In a living room filled with arts and crafts
He said "I like their clothes and their charming ways,
But what I really want is a simple place,
With no fashion clothes 'cause you can't eat those"
Only Ma'd pretend to like the clothes you showed to me,
Something in my heart can tell me it's a weakness,
And maybe you will have more luck playing those tasty games,
But me, I called and called and never heard from her again.
She's too good to share our favorite things,
I'll keep an open mind if you let me in.
Don't let your temper rise, don't get a bitter face.
Try not to judge me on my kind of taste.
And don't go changing clothes when they don't like yours.

this song is about being yourself.. I think the "Things" outside of me are other people's judgments, not material things at all. "Would I complete myself without the things I like around?" I think is talking about people that the singer likes..including someone he cares about romantically.
In the third verse it becomes clear that something is wrong with the singer and his girl. The reference to 'clothes' (which appears several times in the song) is about the image of ourselves that we present to the everyone else. So "Only Ma'd pretend to like the clothes you showed to me" is saying something about how his girl is making him show/be a different person than the one that is really inside of him. The second to last line "And don't go changing clothes when they don't like yours" sounds like advice. The singer realizes he cannot change who he is for another person (nor should he have to).
The last line though is thoughtful...does how other people see you define who you are? I sure hope not
I love this song and Animal Collective...try not to judge me on my kind of taste

Merriweather Post Pavilion is a fantastic album. And this song is the best on the album in my opinion. Second place is Bluish and third is Summertime Clothes
The "things" outside of him, are literally all the "things", material subject, outside of him... He's speaking of taste as style whether it be clothing, art, or anything at all. He is just tired of everyone being so judgemental. and his response is "Am I really all the things that are outside of me?"
maybe we are. but i sure hope not.
merriweather is going to be epic.
animal collective outdo themselves and my highest expectations with every new album.

i love this song. one of my favs. amazing lyrics, like my favorite bit: "Try not to judge me on my kind of taste. And don't go changing clothes when they don't like yours."
so truthful.
i love that line too

slaorenz nailed it, it's about being yourself and not caring what other people may think of your clothes or other material things. though, sadly today you are judged upon whos wearing the latest trend or what have you and not for the person you are(highschool FTL). One of my fav AC songs because of the lyrics.
pretty sure it's 'charming PLATES,' and 'fashion clothes, 'cause you CAN'T eat those.'
Panda's backing vocals:
I don't get them, not their hearts, their taste. There's no need to protect my comforts. Serious threats, threats, threats.
I know that body's built like rock, but I'll take you on. How would you talk to all your kids? Keep them on your knee.
I don't get them, not their hearts, their taste. There's no need to protect my comforts. Serious threats, threats, threats.
What does "Am I really all the things that are outside of me?" mean?
it means that you are the perfect combination of everything that surrounds you, wheter is good or bad, it makes who you are.

It's a question.. does everything around you make you who you are? In my opinion, they're mocking this idea with the followup question "Does the music that I make play on my awkward face?" It's as if to say that the beauty lies in what's produced, not in how the presenter is dressed. You can't hear their music by looking at them, ya know?
