Curs In The Weeds Lyrics
Lover of things,
won't you agree
how the winter could bring
the darkest spring?
With hell on your face,
dirt on the walls
in the back of the place,
you grew and complained.
Father of three,
won't you believe,
that the ones in between,
the ones that are blamed.
Of fickle faith,
cynics that seethe,
how their children are cursed,
cursed to believe.
It's like marrow without bone.
To live in a house with no home.
Where the son is the darkest seed.
He crawls with the curs in the weeds.
Where had you been son?
Not in the street, not in the yard.
Only once, I'll call off the dogs, if you call off your guard.
Where had you gone?
Where had you been?
won't you agree
how the winter could bring
the darkest spring?
dirt on the walls
in the back of the place,
you grew and complained.
won't you believe,
that the ones in between,
the ones that are blamed.
cynics that seethe,
how their children are cursed,
cursed to believe.
To live in a house with no home.
Where the son is the darkest seed.
He crawls with the curs in the weeds.
Not in the street, not in the yard.
Where had you been?

I think it's about a divorce from the perspective of the child.
He feels like he's caught, along with his brothers and sister, between the fighting of his parents. He feel's responsible, even though its not his fault ("The ones in between/the ones that are blamed", "cursed to believe"). He's now a cynic that seethes, because he no longer believes love is possible as his parents, the epitome of a loving relationship for a young child, have failed to love each other.
The artist then goes on to say "It's like marrow without bone/To live in a house with no home." He's physically living in a house with his family, but it does not feel like a home because it is now bereft of love with the parents fighting each other. "The son is the darkest seed" because he is what is left of a relationship gone sour. The only thing that is left of the love the parents once had. So he is [the son] left to crawl and hide with the curs (an aggressive dog in poor condition). He is now some kind of angry and homeless stray who feels like he has been betrayed by his parents inability to keep the family together.
The last part seems like the father or mother asking where the son had gone and been, now that he (or she) is no longer distracted by the fighting and realized that his son had gone off to hide somewhere. The father wants to know where his son has been, but fails to realize that he has run off because of him and the fighting with his wife. He just doesn't understand how it's hurting the son, and he can't.
has a very country, rustic feel to it. i hear ray lamontagne a bit, but only because i knew ray before i knew horse feathers.
regarding a meaning, i can only pull general feelings from the verses, i'm a bit shy of having a full understanding (however subjective)
at first, i think of how terrible things can spontaneously pop up, or even worse how bad can come from good. i'm then directed towards the image of hell on your face, which leads me to thinking about a garden with the growing and dirt images. however, i interpret it to mean someone has been tested, they're aged (grown) and things haven't gone perfectly. complaints arise.
i get lost in the father of three verse, and i start to think that the song touches on how traditions and old, stubborn ways of doing things can cause trouble. I don't see this song challenging old methods and practices, but its sort of a blur of family, trials, and persistence.
i didn't know a cur was a hunting dog
have you heard of samamidon? very simliar i think. if you havent you should check out the song "SamAmidon - Saro" Amazing song! Love charles too by the way!

i think that this song is about a father and 3 songs, as it says in the 3rd verse. i think it might be talking about, the middle child. "the ones in between, the ones that are blamed" might possibly be talking about how a middle child feels, sometimes forgotten, blamed, brushed off.lives in the house, but isn't always heard or taken seriously. then eventually the child gets sick of it and packs up. thats just what how i feel about this song, especially speaking as the middle child.
i get kinda of a Christianity feel when i listen to the song.. I love the song! kinda second guessing my beliefs.. all the more reason to love it.. (ill try keep it simple)
like the beginning he say "Lover of things" so kinda addresses who this song is to there.
then "Father of three" - the father, the son and the holy spirit.
"With hell on your face, dirt on the walls in the back of the place, you grew and complained." - to keep it simple human sins.
"Father of three, won't you believe, that the ones in between, the ones that are blamed. Of fickle faith, cynics that seethe, how their children are cursed, cursed to believe." - this to me is referring to us and every other generation after the death and before the resurrection of christ. how we are all kinda the ones in between to believe off the storys of are past. kinda how we are cursed and the ones who were there were so much more lucky to see christ at work. then the ones who whitness the rapture and have there chance to change before it is hell..
you can kinda put the rest of the verses together after that..
where had you gone? where had you been?
Only once, I'll call off the dogs, if you call off your guard.
Yeah, the father of three part definitely had me thinking of God. The marrow without bone could be representative of trying to believe in God without any firm evidence as we are that middle child after the death but before the return.

I don't think this is right but it's just the way I interpreted the song. I actually thought it was about a father being divorced from his wife. This divorce had a thorough impact on the father and he did horrible things to the children. One of them (the middle child) can't take it anymore so he leaves. I think at the end, the boy comes back when he is grown up. His father is still there and sits in his chair and asks the question, where had you gone?
Let me know what you think :)
I think your interpretation is the most accurate.

When I first listened to it I got the feeling of life as both sad and happy, and it sounded like growing up. It feels warm and happy but it's continually filled with sadness, and if you carry that meaning throughout the song it's really powerful. Many of the lyrics sound like they could be talking about an unfairness a child experiences, father of three, won't you believe the middle child's words?
As the song progresses, the things that the child sees as unfair become more mature. Being forced to believe in what your parents do, simply because you weren't exposed to anything else. Or the house that is no longer home, having to grow up and leave behind what you once viewed as everything. No longer being attached to the only constant in your life.
Then either the perspective shifts to the father or the child grows more and is now a father himself, and questions where his son his, who presumably has undergone the same things he did, and left as he did. A cycle that never learns from itself.
So, I think it's less about running away and more about leaving home as we all do at some point, the father just misses when exactly his son left because for a while the son was physically there but not a part of it anymore.
I listened to this a first, a while back, and immediately loved it, but never really got a meaning from it until after i read the lyrics here... I think the "lover of things", is his child, who has fallen out with his father, after the divorce. The father is the narrator, and is asking for forgiveness... He couldnt provide what the kid wanted, and the child resented him, ran away...

The second verse reaches out to his grown son, a father of three, as well. possibly divorced now too, who's son is up to the same things...
The second verse reaches out to his grown son, a father of three, as well. possibly divorced now too, who's son is up to the same things the grown son did as a child... the last verse, to me, is asking for a truce with the narrator's son, but the bridge seems to say that the son has failed better than the father. "Marrow without bone."
It describes the two family system perfectly.
"to live in a house with no home"
beautiful song but what's it about? a father and his three sons..a family broken apart?
