The Day Before the Day Lyrics

Speeches won't be made today, clocks will carry on
Flowers won't be left in parks, work will still be done
People won't be dressed in black, babies will be born
No flags will fly, the sun will rise,
But we will know that you are gone

You who loved to love,
and believed we can never give enough

It wakes me every single night, thinking through the day
Did you stop at any time, have doubts at any stage?
And were you calm or were you numb, or happy just to get it done?
Well I've lived my life without regret, until today

You who loved to love,
and believed we can never give enough

I didn't get to say goodbye, the day before the day
Was trying to get to work on time, that's why I turned away
And missed the most important thing, you ever tried to say
Well I've lived my life without regret until today

And you, who loved to love, and believed we can never give enough
And you, who hoped that underneath, we all felt the same
That was until
The day before the day

The day before the day
The day before the day
Oh, the day before the day
The day before the day
Oh, the day before the day
Oh, the day before the day
Oh, the day before the day.

In 2006 Dido's father passed away, which was one year after she started to write songs for the Safe Trip Home album. Many of the songs in the album seem to have to do with death, and the album itself is dedicated to her father.

Usually in concert, she will explain what each song means. Although she hasn't gone on tour yet for this one, I'm fairly sure it's safe to say this will have something to do with the loss of her father.

this song IS about her father. kinda obvious isnt it?

I'm convinced it's about Dido's father's death. Maybe it's just me projecting a similar situation from my life, but I think she is describing how she didn't get to say goodbye, hear his last words or even see her dad on the day he died. She thinks about his life amd sickness and how his last day looked like. I don't know if my interpretation is right, but the song at least partially fits what I know about Dido's father's story.

Suicide, for sure... these lines make it clear:

"Did you stop at any time, have doubts at any stage? Were you calm or were you numb, or happy just to get it done?"

I can see how the lyrics fit those who’ve lost someone to suicide. I honestly think it was because her father was very ill before he died, and therefore happy just to get it done means that now their pain is relieved. This could also fit people who have lost someone to drug abuse and overdose as well.

First of all, i beleived the lyric in the chorus/hook line is you who love to love and believed we can never give IT UP?

I think this song is about death. particularly suicide. the speaker is talking as if it is after the funeral of a lost loved one.

This first verse is about how even though this person dying seems like the end of the world to the speaker, the world will not stop. It will go on. nothing more will be made of the person.

The second verse i beleive is about the suicide of the person. The third verse is about how the speaker presumably met the person the day before they took their own life and did not ask what was wrong, did not pick up that the person was particularly down because she was rushing to work. The speaker now regrets this.

The day before the day whom ever killed their self.

morbid interpretation but i think this is pretty clear from the lyrics...

any1 else?

My Interpretation

If this is not about suicide, it definitely fits to a T. I just lost a friend to suicide and I am reliving The Day Before The Day over and over again. In fact during the down times, my friend who eventually ended their life would send this song to me. It was his way of letting me know...that this could be the day before the day. My experience was exactly like this song.

When I first got the album and for a few years after, I thought she was writing in the perspective of somebody who lost someone in the twin towers on 9/11
