In the beginning I think he's kind of having a self-talk. This song in general, I think, is about overcoming your past mistakes and learning from them. He's learned right from wrong before those around him and believes that they wont be fooled by what he's figured out. He's proud he has grown and wants everyone else to realize what's right. We all here these everyday sayings like "Walk before you run" and finally realize their meanings when we get older.
It's so easy to relate any song to a situation you're in right now. This probably isn't its' meaning, but I love the first verse because I see it was a girl who wants to get out of a relationship but is too attached to do so. But it's an awful situation and he thinks he can fix it.
