The Hero Lyrics
The blade I swing
Is black as night
Black as my soulless heart
It bears the burden
Of many lives
But I don't feel remorse
I lent my sword
To anyone
Willing to pay the price
No regrets for
What I've done
A mercenary's life
But there I was
On battleground
Until I felt the jaws of death
Cut into my flesh
Defending old and weak
But I did not retreat
Now, here I lie
In my own blood
And strangers cry for me
I'm prepared to meet the gods
I wish they'd let me be
I don't deserve
Their sympathy
I know who I am
My soul is death and misery
I am an evil man
I rest in my blood
Soon I will face the gods
Strangers cry for me
I wish they'd let me be
Show no sympathy
Shed no tears for me
I know who I am
I am an evil man
I know who I am
I am an evil man
Is black as night
Black as my soulless heart
It bears the burden
Of many lives
But I don't feel remorse
To anyone
Willing to pay the price
No regrets for
What I've done
A mercenary's life
On battleground
Until I felt the jaws of death
Cut into my flesh
Defending old and weak
But I did not retreat
In my own blood
And strangers cry for me
I'm prepared to meet the gods
I wish they'd let me be
Their sympathy
I know who I am
My soul is death and misery
I am an evil man
Soon I will face the gods
Strangers cry for me
I wish they'd let me be
Shed no tears for me
I know who I am
I am an evil man
I am an evil man

The song is about how people judge someone by the one good deed that they did and died for. This is an evil man, who probably raped and killed many innocents, as was expected in mercenaries of that time, who was then hired by a man to defend a town of "old and weak" people. He obviously died doing this, and shuns the use of the word "hero" to describe, because, even though he died protecting innocents, he is still an "evil man" who did terrible things.
One of the best Amon Amarth song, definitly in my top 10, even though it's hard to do a top 10.
This song is about a guy who was known as a hero to the population, protecting the "old and weak".
He didn't want to be recognized that way because all he did was killing other people to defend the nation, which was horrible to him.
He got killed, everyone loves him but knows he did bad things "I am an evil man".
Not much else I can add, you two nailed it on the head. By far this is my favorite of all Amon Amarth songs; the emotion just comes through so clear and fully that this song makes me want to cry.
I'm with vonss on this one. The lyrics seem pretty straightforward... he's made a life out of killing others for a reason.
¿Since when AA makes lyrics for Emo's? You got this all wrong. Go listen go Slipknt. This this a mockery about how some Christians prudes judged those Vikings that became mercenaries afterwards.
