Hold Me Up Lyrics
Hold me up in the palm of your hand
Lying to you is a river of sin
Your metaphors, your silent thoughts
Your feelings all too real
Let them spew, a fall from grace
Will do us good today
I'll rip you up
We can love or fry
Lay on me love
I'll take you up again
Ahh, ahh
All that to you in a church by the sea
We're late, but not missing
We'll be older today
I'll rip you up
We can love or fry
Lay on me love
I'll take you up again
Your eyes are too many colors
I can only try
Your energy caught me runnin'
All my juices dry
Ahh, ahh yeah
Images we cannot leave behind
Like two riversides, we hold back
Yeah!
Lift me up in the palm of your hand
lyin' to you is a river of sin
Your metaphors, your silent whores
Your feelings all to real
Let them spew, a fall from grace
will do us good today

I'll lift you up, we can love or cry
Hey, I'm in love, I'll take you up again
Your eyes have too many colours and I can only try
Your energy could be runnin' low, now
The juice is dry
Oh, oh...
Images we cannot leave behind
Like two riversides we roll back
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!
Lift me up
In the palm of your hand
Lying to you is a river of sin, oh...
Your metaphores, your silent calls
Your feelings are too real, oh...
Let them spew, a fall from grace
With your love you had today, oh, oh hey...

This song is so good. And it was used so well in Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
This song made that one of the most romantic and sexy love scenes I've ever watched. I love that movie.

I think this song is about someone who just fell in love with someone. Unbelievably amazing love. But there's something I'm not getting. There's more to it, I know, I just can't figure out what.
It's such an amazing song..
@Peachila I can add to your interpretation. The song structure is very mellow in the verse with easy strumming on the guitar, whereas the chorus is very intense. That's on purpose, as not only the lyrics themselves but even the music is describing what it feels like to share that incredible love. It starts off in the verse with them two infatuated and just in awe of one another feeling warm love. In the chorus, it kicks into a more passionate form of the relationship, perhaps with them spending time together and having fun, just appreciating what they have. The...

The guitar solo sounds out of place at first, but could represent the intensity of them making love. However, Live always had layered meanings in their songs, so I too still think I'm missing something.
Amazing song. Thanks, Mr. Smith, for including it.
First, this song makes Zach and Miri Make a Porno. Live is a terrific band, and never fail to write songs with fantastic messages and meanings.
I think the song is about the ebb and flow of a relationship, perhaps even some marriage vows, as the narrator says "All that to you in a church by the sea, Were late, but not in the same way, Were older today." To me this sounds just like something that would be said at a marriage ceremony. Reading the lyrics from that perspective, they all make sense. He's expressing his seemingly undying love for his partner. No matter the situation, he will always love her.
In any case, it's a very romantic song, set to rock. Perfect for romantics like myself.
i've been trying to find out what song was playing during Zack and Miri's sex scene. It was awesome as was the scene. Beautiful, and I'm so glad I finally found it.
Amazing song and amazingly used in "Zack and Miri make a Porno". I didn't know the song before I saw the movie but fell in love with it the second I heard it. Such a powerful song!
When I first heard the song, I thought it was a love song. Having read the lyrics, I'm not sure anymore.
Since the lyrics are "[l]ying to you is a river of sin," and not lying to you would be a river of sin, it appears that he's lying to her. And he's lying when she's opening her heart to him. "Let them spew, a fall from grace would do us good today..." The fall from grace--the river of sin of his lies in pretending to share emotions together--would make both of them feel better today than the truth. He'll feign the emotion she needs ("we can love or cry"), and by declaring his love, he takes her up into a delusional happiness.
They're "late" in different ways. For her, she's late in the pregnancy sense. For him, he's late in taking steps to prevent it. Now that they're going to have a baby together, they're "older," i.e., adults. And he's promising her the wedding that of the fairytale kind that some girls dream of when they're young. Which I think they still are age-wise.
So I agree with the comment above that he's expressing his undying love to his partner. I just don't think he actually feels it.
In my own defense, I'm happily in a relationship, and not in a post-breakup-there's-no-such-thing-as-love funk. I just think the music's upbeat lovesong feeling doesn't match the somewhat depressing lyrics. (Band of Horses' song "Funeral" is another example of this kind of intentional mismatch.)
I love this song. Have seen Zack and Miri....about five times and always wondered what song it was that was playing in their sex scene. So glad, I actually bothered to find out because it led me to Live. They really are an amazing band.
Agree with most of the posts here. Thought it was amazing in Zack & Miri. Not only am I surprised this song wasn't on the official movie soundtrack but also that it's not on any of Live's albums (I believe it was actually an unreleased track from Throwing Copper). This song has probably become one of my all time favorites of theirs.
My interpretation is that the person writing the song is a male and that they are pretty much describing masturbation.
It's probably one of the reasons why the song isn't generally available to the public.
