Amputations Lyrics

There's no rock and roll in the desert
There's no singing
There's no dancing
There's no heat between lovers on a summer night

Young love, doesn't everyone deserve to be young and in love?

Young love, doesn't everyone deserve to be young and in love?

There's no rock and roll in the desert
There's no singing
There's no dancing
There's no heat between lovers on a summer night

Amputations
Coming home from our father's wars
Amputations
Come home to mother from our father's wars
We were just children

What kind of future are you promising us?
Just another generation living under the threat of the bomb

Pretty simple message - the idea that when a soldier goes off to war he comes home missing a part of himself. He does not get to experience life normally. I love the title of this song. It seems like the theme of the album is war. I would love to see Tom solo and live.

If by "missing a part of himself" you mean literally missing a limb, you'd be correct.

The song is about young soldiers missing out on the things that normal kids get to experience. Being denied certain rites of passage. Like dancing, partying, and young love. There's none of that in "the desert" (the war zone). It's saying, "doesn't everyone deserve these things?"

The "amputations" part is quite literal though. Instead of experiencing those special things, the kids go to war and some come back with no legs, or no arms, or both. A pretty rough deal.

The last part just touches on the self-perpetuating nature or war.

I have a 17 year old step-son with my ex wife. He is and always will be MY son. He has just joined the Marines. I respect his desire to serve, but this song breaks my heart to know he is about to take a path that will potentially exchange his youth for the scars of a war. I love him. This song hits too close to home.
