What If The Storm Ends? Lyrics
(I) What If This Storm Ends?
What if this storm ends?
And I don't see you
As you are now
Ever again
The perfekt halo
Of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against
The planet's last dance
Just for a minute
The silver forked sky
Lit you up like a star
That I will follow
Now it's found us
Like I have found you
I don't want to run
Just overwhelm me
What if this storm ends?
And leaves us nothing
Except a memory
A distant echo
I want pinned down
I want unsettled
Rattle cage after cage
Until my blood boils
I want to see you
As you are now
Every single day
That I am living
Painted in flames
All peeling thunder
Be the lightning in me
That strikes relentless
And I don't see you
As you are now
Ever again
Of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against
The planet's last dance
The silver forked sky
Lit you up like a star
That I will follow
Like I have found you
I don't want to run
Just overwhelm me
And leaves us nothing
Except a memory
A distant echo
I want unsettled
Rattle cage after cage
Until my blood boils
As you are now
Every single day
That I am living
All peeling thunder
Be the lightning in me
That strikes relentless

I take the storm as metaphoric-possibly of many things such as:- -a relationship-what if the relationship ends, and he will no longer see (her, to make this easier to describe) in all her perfection. -Im inclined to see "the storm" as a metaphor for life.
"Just for a minute The siilver-forked sky Lifts you up like a star"
I dont know about any of you, but I've experienced a similar feeling before. A particular event, sometimes a minor one, can light that person up and show them in all their beauty and perfection. In this description, she is in the centre of the storm(ie his life)
"Be the lightning in me" fits as well- if the storm is his life, the lightning is the thing that fuels the storm- hes asking her to be his strength. basically he doesnt want to miss one moment with her and never wants to be parted from her.
Ah, the story of my life played over and over by a frightened South American individual :) This is a beautiful and clever Snow Patrol track. Gary's voice is perfect for it. I liked this song even before it became a sad theme song. It's about a couple who are apart. There is conflict that is preventing them from being together (probably one person's reluctance to love). He wants the conflict to end, but worries that she will not be the same person he's envisioned and he worries that he will let her down. Dreams and fantasies are what we make them (and often we make them larger than life...beautiful; comforting; exciting; w/o conflict; etc). He actually fears the end of what keeps them apart for only then will the truth be revealed...he may not like what he sees; she may not like what she sees (although I'm quite sure she'll still love what she sees); there will be real problems that didn't exist in the dream; there's a chance she'll leave him (keeping her in dreams doesn't allow her to leave...it's safe); etc. I absolutely adore the line 'just overwhelm me." It doesn't mean to smother; it's his plea for her to somehow help him lose his fear so he can finally live free and enjoy the kind of love he has been lacking (due to his self deprival) for far too long. Ahhhhhh....I love this special man so much. (Gary, of course:D)
I adore this song. I can't stop listening to it. I love the way the song starts calm and then crescendo's and you feel more excited the more you listen to it. Almost like it's whipping up a storm inside you. Gary is a beautiful song writer as well as just being beautiful.
'What if the storm ends? And I don't see you As you are now Ever again The perfect halo Of gold hair and lightning Sets you off against The planets last dance Just for a minute The siilver-forked sky Lifts you up like a star That I will follow But now it's found us Like I have a found you I don't wanna run Just overwhelm me'
I think storm is a methaphor for the relationship and he's constantly afraid that it's going to end too soon.I think the way the lyrics are written fit into the concept of the album a hundred million suns. Talking about storms and lightning and planets and stars, All unuversal elements. It's very clever.
'What if the storm ends? At least that's nothing Except the memory A distant echo I won't pin down I've walked unsettled Rattle cage after cage Until my blood boils I wanna see you As you are now Every single day That I am living Painted in flames A peeling thunder Be the lightning in me That strikes relentless'
It's almost like he wants to freeze the relationship as it is now so nothing gets in the way. He describes her as lightning, like she is dangerous to him because she has struck his heart.
'Like I have a found you I don't wanna run Just overwhelm me'
As the song crescendo's he gets more urgent and forceful, almost like he's saying destroy me because he's so consumed by the relationship. gorgeous song xxxxxxx
Hey guys! I just listened to this song after it suddenly got stuck in my head today... I read your thoughts and I have to say I disagree with you both saying the storm in this song is a metaphor for a relationship. My first guess would be that it's the very opposite. I think that it's about him chasing her or maybe they're already getting together. He sees her as perfection, but he fears that when she will love/like him back he will start taking her for granted or he will lose interest in her... or maybe he just doesn't...

Ok so what do you guys think of my perspective?
Yeah it makes sense. I like it, good interpretation J03 <3 <3

I will agree with both interpretations; being that song writers generally don't intend their lyrics to mean just one thing or another. But rather left to the listener and their own perspective. I've listened to this song many times at many stages of my relationship up to break-up and every time it makes sense in a different meaning than the other. Right now, for me it's retrospective and I can see that after all is said and done (after the storm ended, the relationship with all its honeymoon, ups and downs), I wish he had remained the same, not the...

I've listened to this song many times at many stages of my relationship up to break-up and every time it makes sense in a different meaning than the other. Right now, for me it's retrospective and I can see that after all is said and done (after the storm ended, the relationship with all its honeymoon, ups and downs), I wish he had remained the same, not the liar he turned out to be. I always asked him not to change. So, back to the song, it's said in a moment (not literal, could be a stage of the relationship) where you perceive everything as being perfect. Things couldn't have been better. It's so perfect that it scares you. You want to be consumed by it, by him, by her; your partner and not worry about the next moment or the next fallout. You wish time would freeze right there and then... Just my take. But like I said, no interpretation is ever wrong, even if the songwriter wrote it with certain perspective, you could interpret it differently and it would still make sense. That's the beauty of music!! I enjoy reading different perspectives as it gives me insight about other people's worlds, feelings and experiences. It's a rich world.
I think these lyrics are slightly incorrect, or the version I have is different. On my super-clear headphones it sounds more like this:
What if the storm ends? And I don't see you As you are now Ever again The perfect halo Of gold hair and lightning Sets you off against The planets last dance Just for a minute The silver-forked sky Lit you up like a star That I will follow But now it's found us Like I have a found you I don't wanna run Just overwhelm me
