Sleep Awake Lyrics
Protecting you
Protecting me
I throw the evidence into a trunk
And drop it in the sea
Lie awake
I sleep awake
I sleep with one eye on my bedroom door
The other on the cake
Protecting me
Protecting you
Carving away our fingerprints out of
Our finger tips until they're smooth
Lie awake
I sleep awake
I sleep with one eye on my royal flush
The other on the take
I sleep awake
Protecting this
Protecting that
Call it a dead beat with his dead bolt
Wrapped around his artifact
Protecting that
Lie awake
I sleep awake
I sleep with one hand on my .45
The other in my baby's waist
Lie awake
I sleep awake
I go to bed with all my lights turned on
So I don't slip away
I stay awake
Out on the street I keep a started car
Who only waits for me
Conveniently
Lie awake
I sleep awake
Lie awake
I sleep awake
Protecting me
I throw the evidence into a trunk
And drop it in the sea
I sleep awake
I sleep with one eye on my bedroom door
The other on the cake
Protecting you
Carving away our fingerprints out of
Our finger tips until they're smooth
I sleep awake
I sleep with one eye on my royal flush
The other on the take
I sleep awake
Protecting that
Call it a dead beat with his dead bolt
Wrapped around his artifact
Protecting that
I sleep awake
I sleep with one hand on my .45
The other in my baby's waist
I sleep awake
I go to bed with all my lights turned on
So I don't slip away
Out on the street I keep a started car
Who only waits for me
Conveniently
I sleep awake
Lie awake
I sleep awake

for me this songs seems like a mother trying to protect her child from the abusive father (or not mentally stable) so then he doesn't kill her and the child. Seems pretty accurate for this songs since you hear a child screaming and crying throughout the song. I love how dark mother mother makes there songs such as "Arms Tonight" and "O My Heart" this song would be a hard 10/10
Wow, I'm very surprised no one has commented on this song yet. This is a very dark and beautiful song, that is especially interesting to listen to when high. It also pairs very well with "Miles," which is also on the album.
I'd like to get some interpretations of the song!
In my opinion: The song is about a woman who has killed her boyfriend. She disposes of the evidence, and then lays next to his dead body, "protecting him." She has a gun if someone finds her, and a getaway car on the street. Clearly she isn't entirely sane, and there could be many other interpretations (the obvious one being that her boyfriend has killed someone and that she is protecting him) but this one seems to fit the best.
Or her child has killed someone, hence "I sleep with one hand on my 45, the other 'round my baby's waist". She disposes of the body and is protecting her child. We all know mothers call the children baby's at any age.

I Love this Band!! I Love this dark love song!
To me it is about a Bonnie and Clyde type situation, wherein this couple are professional criminals, killing, cheating, stealing. That's why they are getting rid of their fingerprints, sleeping with one eye open, disposing of things, carrying guns, keeping the car ready to go!! I would imagine that if you're a criminal, you've always got one eye open, watching your back. The women in the story is always on alert since they probably have people after them, wether it be other criminals or the law.
This song is so dark. I think it's maybe her boyfriend asked her to kill him (due to depression/disease/something like that), and she did...
Loving someone or something so dearly that you would do anything to protect it, even if it is immoral.
Anxious attachment and the toll it takes on you.
@xan1012156 As well as the toll it takes on the someone or something.
