Stop Lyrics
I know a sickness so ancient and cross
No crucifix could ever fix enough
In the basement of a church, these people, they talk
There is a line
That must be walked
If you wanna make it stop
Then stop
I know a place where the future is denied
I know a hand that twitches inside
For some of us the glass is filled with lights
But if the honey makes you sick,
honey, there is a line
That must be walked if you wanna make it stop
Then stop
Stop
Lie down
You don't have to talk
Slow down
Breathe
Stop
Slow down
It's not your fault
Look around, there's so many of us
So many of us
You are not alone
Ever
Ever
Ever
Stop
Call in the backup and the backup comes
Nobody can help you if you won't
Inside your chest your heart is just hurt
Behind your eyes a need replaced a want
I know a sickness so ancient and cross
A crucifix can never fix enough
I know a past when the future is lost
I know of a line that must be walked
There is a darkness and there is a light
And there is a choice.
For a balance to be made every night
A weakness must be found
If you want it to stop
Stop
Stop
No crucifix could ever fix enough
In the basement of a church, these people, they talk
There is a line
That must be walked
If you wanna make it stop
Then stop
I know a hand that twitches inside
For some of us the glass is filled with lights

First of all I think this is a beautiful song, and a very great choice for the last song on the album. I think it may be a song about addiction, and recovery. It's a painful song. There is a lot of hope in it though. There is love in it as well. I love how it reminds me I'm not alone, and nothing is impossible to overcome, no matter how dark it may be.
This song is unique because of its hope. There is acknowledgement of the disease and the effects. Most importantly, there is recognition of the process and support among fellow strugglers.
i agree i think this song is (based on his past struggles with addiction) a "coming to terms and understanding" stage of recovery. if you look back on his most recent albums, it seems as though he is telling the story of his journey through letting go of addiction, especially between easy tiger to cardinology. starting with "two" going into almost each song on this new album. either way, the message of this song is clear and to me it has substantial meaning to me because i struggled with addictions as well and can relate to the words of this song. Ryan carries with him untouchable talent.
[this songs makes me believe that people still care about each other...]
Agh...when he sings... "you are not alone, ever..." i could just die. Amazing.
This song gives so much hope, its amazing! But at the same time, its filled with so much saddness!
Only Ryan Adams could have written a song like this!
this song is not about his past addiction to drugs he said so in an aol interview, i think its about being lonely in this world and overcoming that and finding the right person, cause its getting winter and if you want any flowers you got to get your seeds into the ground

Yeh, this is about substance abuse is it not? Wonderful song, so sad, such a struggle
Could almost be a theme song for Alcoholics Anonymous or any other 12 Step Program.
"I know a sickness so ancient and cross No crucifix could ever fix enough" -Obviously about addiction.
"In the basement of a church, these people, they talk There is a line That must be walked" -Most AA meetings are held in churches or other large gathering places, especially in big cities. Ryan is known to attend meetings in NYC.
"But if the honey makes you sick" -Drugs/Alcohol is the "honey" that makes you sick either physically or mentally
In all the song sounds like a conversation between Ryan and his sponsor. Brilliant.
