i think it is about a guy how fell for his best friend, and he realizes he is stupid for not seeing it before ("Maybe I'm blind, maybe I'm blind Oh I couldn't see you shine And shimmer right in front of my eyes") and he is trying to tell her and doesnt know if shes going to take it the right way and he doesnt want her to reject him ("And honey let me sing you a song And listen to my words as they come out wrong But don't run away")

no. its about taking for granted someone thats better than the rest, letting her slip away. then you realize what youre missing out on and of course the girls reluctant to even listen to what he's trying to say. because you only get one chance to be blind, right? then after that you're just stupid and lonely.

i think it means that he's finally realized he's in love with his good friend, and she's saving him from the darkness. He's not quite sure how to tell her but he does :)

The song is beautiful yes, but it means something so much different. Hopefully I don't ruin the song but in the above quote he is saying that he cheated on her. He is trying to tell her that it didn't mean anything and he doesn't dwell on it that long because the song is about how beautiful she is and that he loves her not about the affair.
The meaning suggested about cheating, why would that be the only interpretation? Has the writer expressed it in an interview? It could also mean that they left a relationship they thought was "the one" that didn't end up being that way and now with this person it is working in a way that others never did. Also, even though it's recorded with a guy singing it, there is no gender to the lyrics so it can go either way. It's an amazing song regardless of what the original meaning was.
I'd never heard of this song until this morning when my computer spontaneously started playing it when there were no audio programs running and no web pages with it. There were no files that had any portion of it in it on my computer. The really ironic/spooky part is since last night I'd been struggling with an issue that this song fits perfectly.
