New Town Lyrics

new town
there's a place
a mad affair
in a new world
heaven sent
a life that's made for us
out of luck
out of touch
out of love

no concrete jungle
dancing feet
cul-de-sac of desire
is in itself
destroying me
I've got to live it down
don't want to dwell in history
that's why I'm leaving now

new town
there's a place
to do or die
in a new world
heaven sent
a life that's made for us
out of luck
out of touch
out of love

no laughing boys
forbidden dreams
no willow weep
for me now
the shadow hanging over me
I've got to tear it down

new town - calling me

Cover art for New Town lyrics by Bryan Ferry

On the surface, the song's narrator is expressing a wish that many of us have had at one (or several) points in our life. To wipe the slate clean and to leave the troubles of our old life behind. To find this elusive "new town" promises new romance adventure etc. But there is an elusive melancholy in the music and Bryan Ferry's vocals. It's as if his narrator grudgingly knows that is dreams of a better new life may be impossible to obtain in reality, or may come at some terrible price. The slow, descending minor-key piano part at the end of the song adds to this ominous mood.
