Fox in Its Hole Lyrics

I live just like a fox in its hole
I live just like a fox in its hole
And they'll never know

A fox in the city burrowed under the hive
You bees can buzz around all you want
You'll never know my life
I live just like a fox in its hole
And they'll never know

My teeth are just like razors
Oh, sharp as the night is long
And honey holds no sway for me
I don't need what they got
I live just like a fox in its hole
I live just like a fox in its hole
And they'll never know

My God owns the ocean
The river belongs to him
And when that honey all dries up
Those bees won't know how to swim
And they'll never know
I live just like a fox in its hole
And they'll never know

Cover art for Fox in Its Hole lyrics by Jolie Holland

Sweet song. Jolie Holland has that incredible unsettled voice which makes her sound so fragile but still so decisive in her lyrics. The whole bee image for the city is taken from Virgil's Aeneid book 12, but here she is saying she has decided to focus on the important things in life - practical skills (ie "teeth...like razors") rather than the honey of the bees which seems to her a useless luxury and "holds no sway". It clever how she uses sway in the 3rd verse - a sort of forewarning I think of the flood of God in the final verse. Also, the Noah's Ark style story is rewitten in this song in a bitter, gloatig way by Jolie Holland. They won't know how to surviv when things go wrong, but she will be ready; like her voice - she seems fragile, a minority/outcast type, but she knows hat she is doing.

Why has hardly anyone posted on any Jolie Holland songs?
