Sidedish Friend Lyrics
Do you wanna be my sidedish friend?
Cuz I'll miss you if you go for good, yeah
We can stay together 'til the very end of time
If it's understood...
That I don't want you hangin' out with me
But I want you when I call
We can stay together separately
And we won't be lonely at all
Oh boy, oh boy, I got to think about that, oh boy
Do you wanna be the one on hold?
Cuz you know I'll always come right back, yeah
We can find a quiet place for both of us to go
If you always know...
That I don't want you hangin' out with me
But I want you when I call
We can stay together separately
And we won't be lonely at all
Oh boy, oh boy, I got to think about that cuz
Everytime (everytime)
I think I'm alright (I think I'm doing alright)
I think I'll win you over
I hear you say...
That I don't want you hangin' out with me
But I want you when I call
We can stay together separately
And we won't be lonely at all
I don't want to get too close to you
And I don't want you close to me
There's a backdoor waiting just for you
If this isn't what you need
There's a backdoor waiting just for you
If this isn't what you need
Cuz I'll miss you if you go for good, yeah
We can stay together 'til the very end of time
If it's understood...
But I want you when I call
We can stay together separately
And we won't be lonely at all
Cuz you know I'll always come right back, yeah
We can find a quiet place for both of us to go
If you always know...
But I want you when I call
We can stay together separately
And we won't be lonely at all
I think I'm alright (I think I'm doing alright)
I think I'll win you over
I hear you say...
But I want you when I call
We can stay together separately
And we won't be lonely at all
And I don't want you close to me
There's a backdoor waiting just for you
If this isn't what you need
If this isn't what you need

This song is incredibly catchy, and very unique. Two people who are both either afraid of commitment or insecure about each other have carved out a relationship where they both want each other when it is convenient, though I think there is definitely the hint that, potentially, there could be more if there was a little more honesty and communication. At the end of the day though, they can both turn around and move on at any time. It's a great song, and to me, shows the tragedy and "complex simplicity" of some types of modern relationships. Maybe this is just a sexual thing and they don't want to involve emotions, but that may be inevitable to an extent... Overall I just love the song.
I hate it when people start their comments with "I so understand this song because I lived it", but it is the case here for me.
The song is about a friend who doesn't want to be your best friend and calls you whenever she needs you and will not call you otherwise. It's as if the other person is ashamed of her friend. I had a "friendship" like that and I laughed hysterically when I heard:
We can stay together separately And we won't be lonely at all
Because this "friend" used similar words to describe our relationship. It's okay, cause we always think of each other.
I don't think it is necessatily about a sexual or intimate relationship. I think it is about an actual friendship. Or at least that's my interpretation.
Couldn't have said it better. It's all about avoiding having feelings for the other person, but since it s inevitable to have feelings, at least we can avoid sharing them. I love the way Rachael structures the song, especially the part when she sings about how every time she thinks she's won him over, she hears him say the same thing, which puts her back to square one again. It's that two people use the physical things to replace a mutual denial of emotions. Simple lyrics, but conveys soooo much.
I can't believe there aren't more comments on this song!!
This one is definitely my favorite from the new album so far. It's just so great to turn it up while driving.
Making someone a "sidedish friend" is such a defense mechanism. You know you have someone hooked with the physical relationship, but until you can get them to admit to an emotional one, you pretend that you only want them as a fling on the side.
im actually going thru this as we speak...its perfect to have someone to have some fun and affection with no strings attached..once things get too serious between people it ruins things and then drama is born!....so good jam..perfect for this chapter in my life. :]
Settling for second best.
I used to think this meant that too, about two people not wanting to make a commitment in a relationship till i saw the full lyrics i noticed she says ... "Everytime (everytime) I think I'm alright (I think I'm doing alright) I think I'll win you over I hear you say..." .... meaning everytime she thinks shes finally got this guy and won him over he says he just wants to be "sidedish friends" and shes struggling with that fact "Oh boy, oh boy, I got to think about that" But thats just how i interpreted it cause thats sorta what im goin through right now liking a guy sooo much but all he wants is to be "sidedish friends" and even though i want more ill settle for that because i like him soo
